What car 40K budget?
Due to change in circumstances, I will soon be looking for a new car. Having half heartedly looked late last year for a car upto 32K, I found it incredibly difficult to find something better. Currently own an S2 Elise, with enough power, uprated suspension, wheels/tyres, it hasnt been the most reliable car, but it is awesome.
This will be a 2nd car as is my Elise at the moment, it needs to be fun/RWD and light weight, but good for taking on long trips into Europe, I would like more power, something under 3 years old preferable.
The most obvious choice at the moment, would be to Honda my Elise.
Thanks

Cant believe youre thinking of getting rid of the Elise after all the things you have had done to it. You havent had the Nitrons long have you. If the reliability of the K p!sses you off(and Im not surprised the problems youve had), just Honda it. If thats not good enough, supercharge the Honda

I just got a Boxster S, new model. I was looking at that, the 111R and the CSL.
111R was discarded because I wanted a bit more touring ability/practicality
CSL ....well I definitely wanted a drop top sooner rather than later, and I feel I'l be able to sell the Box on alot easier to move to a CSL(if I feel I need to) than the other way around...CSL's gave BMW dealers nightmares for a long long time 'till they finally sold all of them...I want to wait till the memory has faded a little before maybe dipping my toe...though the Box is very satisfying

How about one of Blackpools finest TVRs? Questionable reliability but BHP per pound and their fantastic styling make up for some of the down sides. Should get a good choice with that budget too, just save some spare dollars for a top of the range RAC membership!

Honda engine would be great, but then add on the cost of tarting up the Clams, seats, and possibly a supercharger and you are looking at 16K atleast maybe more on a car currently valued at 16-17K, bit of no brainer.
The Noble is a great car, sorry fantatsic car, test drove one 2 years ago, but lack of luggage space and reliabilty does concern me.
Test drove the new Boxster S, which I thought was superb, but its not as raw or edge of your seat stuff, compared to the Elise.
I quite like the idea of a Porker but it would have to be a GT3 or GT3 RS, or 996 Turbo, all of which are well over my budget.
Matt NSX again is good but Id want a Type R, which again is over my budget.
Looked at a T350c, reliabilty scares me off, new Sagaris and 3 year warrenty looks intreting thou.
Any more for any more?

Matt,
The M3 CSL is the only other car I'd go for in your case. There are 3 for sale on Pistonheads and all are around the £40k mark. They are quite simply stunning, and you have to drive one just to appreciate how good they are. Would be reliable and decent service intervals etc. Plus space for luggage etc.
The only thing worth upgrading are the brakes.
Matt
PS. you about at all over the next few days? Let me know............

Ok I havnt drove an M3 or CSL, but whats the point in paying all the extra £££ on a CSL when you can buy a decent M3. You already have a out and out performer? Just because you have a nice budget dont go wasting your cash. Carnt you upgrade the stock M3 brakes to a better spec than the CSL aswell? Spend the cash you save on a Breiting Bently (GT?)

You've obviously read the top gear style article BUT never actually been in or followed one round a track etc. The CSL is simply awesome and a MUCH MUCH better car than the stock M3.
Oh and yeah I expect you could upgrade the M3 but how much would it cost and how much would you loose when selling a non standard car?

TBH at 40K with under 10K miles the CSL looks a good car on paper as mentioned is on my shortlist, not sure if my cup of tea, also I like cars that are unique. I guess now it has taken its initial depreciation, it will hold its own in the 2nd hand market due to the low volume of sales.

Video taken from my site. If you havent seen it before then watch it and try not to fall in love ......... big download but worth it and the sound alone.
