Isn't that a bit like celebrating getting old ?
Do you enjoy a pipe, your wife heating your brown checked slippers by the fire, and talking about working down the mill.

Yes 65 mpg, it's easily obtainable. And as for *aweful* customer service, I get a mate who's a vag mechanic who does it.
Mock all you like, but it's an unbeatable package for mile munching.

You got the wrong 1.6 then. The early cars were 105bhp, performance akin to that of a 1.6 205 GTi - so quite pokey. The later 1.6 cars were 80bhp and 0-60 in 11s, they were cack.

65 mpg was when I was doing part of the North Wales to luton run (GF now lives in Bodelwyddan Castle). Average MPG for the whole trip was 58 MPG averaging around 80 mph.
Pipe and slippers? Yes I really want to rack up thousands of miles motorway driving in a short space of time, spend at least £80 on Optimax a trip rather than £35 diesel in an already high mileage car.
And fun car, why not the Suzuki sj 413 with the doors, windscreen and roof off with a whole 45 bhp ish (cheap as chips!)

yes, these tdis are impressive cars. my brother has a new tdi140 Golf and i was impressed with its relaxing drive- not much gearchanging just use that torque! wher i do much prefer my scoob though is when i really want to press on- like when i want to overtake 5-6 cars on quite a short straight often accelerating from 60-120mph . would not attempt that in the tdi!

Are they any good? Thinking of chopping in the Scooby (When I get it back from the garage) at some point, and I'm thinking diesel. Yes, its miserly, and won't be as good as the Scooby, etc. etc. but its something I'm thinking about. I've been driving a 106 1.4d for the last few weeks which is pretty damn awful, but wondered what a 'proper' TDi is like. Have heard that the Golfs are only good up to 3K revs?

65MPG, really? I've seen all the stories of unbelievable consumption so I got myself a 1.8 N/A diesel. I then did a brim to brim and calculated that I had achieved 51MPG after driving like a nun for 2 weeks. Yawn, it was so boring but I was sorta pleased with the result. I just can't imagine how you would get anywhere near 60MPG let alone 65MPG. Did you do a brim to brim or are we talking built in trip computer 'guestimate'? I know I could get 999MPG on the Cav computer - lol.
I won't believe it until I've done it myself.

There's 2 trip displays, ones instant and can go up to 200 mpg, and changes every second. the other is an average of a journey taken from point to point. I have seen over 65 a few times. And did get around 60 mpg for a 200 mile journey door to door, all motorway and no stop/start and driving around 75-80 mph. Ive seen an improvement since the chip was fitted ( one of the claims is increased MPG)
It's true there is a fairly narrow band for power in the tdi Golf. But it is very torquey and the power is very usable.
