Ok so you've got a couple of *quick* estates to choose from with a budget of 25k...
Lets say mpg is a consideration but not everything...
A4 Avant, Older S4, Scooby wagon!, Volvo.. etc...
Very interested to hear what you all think re this one... fave older S4 at the moment... practical ish lol
Lets hear em!

Hmm... If you want a bloody fast car, the RS4. If you want a driver's car, perhaps not the RS4. I've never driven one , but I've read evo which qualifies me as an expert . It's been in group tests a couple of times, and astounds on how fast it is - but no-one would chose to have one.
Weird.

Guys lets be specific on prices rather than throwing about ideas.. I also like RS4's... but like I said we have 25k guys... I want details and experiences too. RS4 with good paperwork for 25?
How about an S4 for sub 20k.... ? Like the chip option.

You're pretty close to a brand new JDM 2.5 Forester STI for £25k

You'll be very lucky to get a decent RS4 for under 25K....They still sell for around the 30K mark.
A late (2000/2001) S4 Avant with lowish mileage should be 14-17K. A few hundred £s later your talking 320BHP, several thousand £s later your talking 400-420 BHP.

the audi s6 avant is a good option too, as it's much cheaper than the rs4 !! and a 4.2 litre v8 too..... ho flippin ho........ 450bhp...
bit of a bland driving experience, but for about 20k, a bargain, and bigger than an a4 avant.
or how about a saab 95 turbo estate.... (high pressure one) class motor, different and 10k - 14 gets u a good un.
look at this web site for some models for sale on almost all of your shortlist

Have a bit of experience with an S4 2000 model.
Not that much room in the back so if its praticality your after you might be better off with a A6 S6 which is quite easily within your price range.
The S4 of this era is easily in your price range and can still be found at main dealers. 2001 model should be available for about £18K much less if private sale. Lots of change for insurance/servicing/mods etc from £25K
As previous AMD chip will take it well over 300bhp if needs be.
Fuel: 22mpg average without chip
Very well made
Very discreet
Handling is very safe but makes a very raid cross country machine. Unless you drive like a maniac these will be quicker than most so called rwd sports cars especially in the wet.
Try one

not being bias IMO
I would say a Mitsubshi Galant VR4 Legnum
4 Wheel Drive
Tiptronic (Manuals are very rare)
2.5L V6 Twin Turbo
280 BHP
Nice driving in Town or blasting down the road
Downside is servicing every 4500 miles and 45k mile service is around £600-£900

I was looking at a S4 avant but heard that rear legroom isn't all that and that the security on most (if not all audis) is pish
I'm still considering a forester but 20 ish mpg on a good is a bit worrying with the rising fuel prices.
I'm also looking at a Saab 9-3 aero SS and waitng on the 9-3 sportwagon (2.8 V6 turbo, 250hp !!!)

I have yet to see a fast estate car that compares to the VR4 for what it costs.
Plus, it will equal most of the cars above in most areas, that are double the price.
Plus, best looking of the lot

You could get the S4 and smarten up the suspension and re-map. However it will be nothing like the wide shouldered RS4 and have up to 470Lb ft after a few minor tweaks.
I worked it out that my RS4 was about a £10k premium on the S4, and probably worth it (when accounting for re-sale premium). Still miss the STi V's handling but I did 20 laps at Castke Combe recently and it aquited itself very well indeed. [NEVER again though - unless I actually buy Pirelli PLC ]
