Reanult 5 Turbos..

Reanult 5 Turbos..
My turbo is on the way out for the Renault5... blue smoke everywhere!
Didn't have change to find a replacement for the hill climb yesterday..
Instead of getting a standard turbo to put back on, was wondering if anyone has any experience in turbos for the r5?
I don't want to spend loads on it, and the turbo would be running around 16psi boost.
Anyone have experiece with any of the hybrids? The r5 is going to be used in the hill climb and rally, so a fast spooling turbo with some ooomph is what is needed

if you dont want to spend much your options are limited, you should be able to get a T25 turbo for about £400ish from the right people. universal turbos supply more of the tuners for their turbos but sell direct at about half the cost
a rover tomcat turbo is also a T25 and doesnt need much modifications to fit onto a 5.... should be able to get 1 cheap froma scrappy or a breaker...
16psi... Id still be tempted to stick with the std T2 or a modified 1 with enlarged oil galleries etc for the quicker spool up time if your hill climbing, I use a modified T2 on my reno which runs 19psi with no probs but I do have a Front mount Intercooler.... defo gonna need a alloy IC if you stick with the T2 and run 16psi

if you have the std IC you need to take the top cap off and take out the inside thermostat and flap.... then you'll wanna silicone it back together and stick a **** off jubilee clip on it too hold it together... when you get to about 1bar the std IC can easily split.... not good. plus the IC only works between certain intake temperatures.... thats why you take the insides out....
make sure you get the fueling set up correctly.... if you up the boost to about 16psi chances are you'll need a 135mm jet and a 1.2 air corrector in the carb, all cars are differnt though so best to stick it on some rollers. they are easy to set up... should be on and off in half hour..

Blimy, dont you know how to use Google? Come on Ive given you a fair bit to use and go on. not hard to have a quick search is it? would guess <£400 for a brand new spanker. if the budget is tighter go for the T25 rover tomcat turbo, bet you'll find 1 for £150....

lol.. well actually I wouldnt mind I do enjoy working on the ole reno's, replacing a turbo is only about an hours job and that includes getting the tools out and putting them away again.... BUT, you know what they say... do a job yourself and you'll get more satisfaction from it Buy a haynes manual
and anyhow, I need to do work to my own reno before I fix any booger elses. misses wouldnt be too impressed if Im fixing other cars and leaving mine to rot

Apart from the obvious which is a full can of WD40 or other makes of penatrating oil left for a few hours, try running the engine for a while. take it for a spin and get it warm and then have a go (watch burning your hands though ) only other thing is grind the bolt off the thread... done that before... luckily it was 1 that was facing up rather on the other side of the turbo...

what else has been done to handle increased boost scoobyboy1?
In car boost controller
Scorpion Exhaust system
K-tec downpipe
Group A carb
Roll Cage
Cobra Monaco bucket seats
Polished Rocker cover
K-Tec T25 turbo
Clio 16V wheels
Boost Gauge
Piper Cams
Lowered
Weve also ripped all the interior so well need to adjust the back brakes as ive heard that 5's backends tend to slip out when the rear seats etc have been removed and weve tried to make the outside as standard as we can, when we 1st bought the car it had a new engine and gearbox which was the main reason we bought it and cost us £800, but some lad had spoiled it by putting Window tints on a Scooby Scoop and a load of tacky bolt ons, and loads of bloody stickers which are now removed and look how a 5 should look on the outside, completly standard.
What have you done to your 5 Christian! I remember you was looking for a Engine and gearbox in the wanted section a few weeks back.

thought I'd logged on to RTOC for a second, but then realised the spelling is far too good on this thread
Am in the process of having my 5 'slightly speeded up' which includes a garrett hybrid turbo, should find out tomorrow hopefully which one is being fitted, I know garrett supplied a comprehensive options list of about 10 different spec turbos for the 5 to the place that is developing ours.

lol @ spelling comment
Blot, your having a turbo fitted but you aint got a clue what it is? I hope your being sponsored rather than paying for it seriously though there is no point in the 10 specs that you pointed out. there isnt much difference between 8 of the buggers....

Yes, you're right, there is very little difference between some of them

lol.. at 30psi its the liners you want to be worried about IMO but yes you can run 30psi on a GTT, just not all the time. maybe for the quarter mile I see no reason why not. the trick is keeping the intake temperatures down
off course you could go for low comp pistons to let you run high boost but theres not much point because you'll lose power with low comp pistons....
where theres a will, theres a way...
Blot, your a brave man whos doing the work if you dont mind me asking?

Well they were daft enough to ask me which turbo I wanted, not what turbo was needed! Not going for that one really, actually building with reliability still No.1 priority as I share the car in the northern sprint championship, so it does tend to be driven flat out most of the time, cooling has been the priority with cone filter and fmic, whilst they were doing that it made sense to get new turbo as the original was restricted to standard under cup car regs. Am calling in tomorrow so will find out what we got!!

blot, IMO the std air box is the way too go. much better than a cone filter.... the saxo boys pay £xxx for an air filter that the GTT has as std.
just a thought...

Dropped in at lunchtime, turbo is a variation of the T25, designed for 24-32psi with quick spool up and minimal lag, think it is M184R version but probably wrong. Either way, it looks shiny and new so it must be fast........

I got a T25 for mine off ebay brand new for 500 quid, could have got it alot cheaper if I spoke to the right people on rtoc.org Im currently running 18psi on that, but have had it up to 25 for short bursts.
