Advice on getting a 2002 Forester Turbo S auto
Hi all
will be viewing a Forester on the weekend. Any tips on what to look at for on a 2002 Forester Turbo S auto?
What are these cars like?
Thanks

My dad's got an S Turbo of that vintage, albeit a manual, and he's had no problems whatsoever. Tyres are a bit pricey though so budget that into negotiations if they're worn. His have just needed replacing so the time's about right for the one you're looking at too.
It's quick and comfortable, that's about all I can say about it from my experience. It's not a particularly inspiring drive but it's not a sports car is it. It's a bloody quick tank is what it is.
Oh and check for panel damage because they're made with tinfoil panels

I might be going out on a limb here but the NA engine would be high compression whereas I'd assume the Turbo engine to be low compression. Therefore, and this is a leap , would the turbo engine OFF BOOST return better economy than the NA?

Saw the car today and took it for a test etc. Very nice. The autobox is pretty responsive and seems to blip the throttle when you want to acclerate. Handling is very good for it's size and height and was surprised at the lack of roll compared to similar cars. Has loads of space in the back and good rear seating.
Put deposit down and will pick it up next Saturday once they've fixed the electric mirrors and heated seats.
Thanks for your input all!

Good choice... I have a 2001 Forester S Turbo automatic with 100k on the clock!!
When I get my foot down (with the power button on) I get 17mpg!!!
I think the best I managed was 27mpg completely off turbo, with an average of 21mpg mixed driving, so a little thirsty, but I need to get the MAF and lamda sensors checked out just in case.
Biggest improvement was the addition of a WRX (18mm, rather than the standard 13mm) rear anti roll bar. The 17" wheels make a difference as well, and I got some Whiteline drop links fitted just in case the old ones had worn over the last 100k.
A H&S backbox for a little more burble, as well as a K&N panel filter to help breathing.
A rear spoiler was added, because I could!! As well as a rear cargo net from an XT.
I also have a boost gauge to monitor the 0.5bar of boost!
I'm in two minds whether to take the tuning any further, as it's meant to the family runabout for my wife (and I get lumbered with her Ford Ka day to day )
If I go any further, then I have a Dawes Device and Dawes AFR to pep it up a bit!
Tints are probably the next modification though, but swapping the 2 pots for 4 pots maybe a good move.
There is a lot of cross over with the Impreza (such as the classic downpipe and centre section, but not the backbox, anti roll bars, drop links, intercoolers, dump valves, etc)
Remember that the wheels should ideally have an offset of ET48, but you can get away with ET45. Don't use the bog standard Impreza wheels with the ET53 offset, as they go into the hubs too much.
Also the UK S Turbos have a TE035 turbo, which is smaller than the TD04, so you won't be able to get the tuning ability (I think 250bhp is the limit), but you can change it for a TD04 from the UK Imprezas and get closer to 280-300bhp depending on supporting modifications. You also have the advantage of being able to Ecutek the standard ECU, but you will not be able to have it mapped on the rollers due to the gearbox.
Enjoy your new car! As Ira said we are a friendly bunch on www.subaruforester.com
