Default To those who have owned/driven e36 BMW M3

Hi,

Quick query.

Taking into consideration weight, aerodynamics, transmission losses etc approx (as near as you can guess) what kind of power would you need in a classic scooby UK to stay step for step with an M3 Evo e36 up to say 140 in a straight line drag?

just out of interest as I was a passenger in one the other day and it felt amazingly quick for a n/a car. Much Much quicker than a standard UK Scoob from a rolling start.

yeah, true but i believe they are a couple of hundred kilos heavier as well. I suppose there's transmission losses to consider too but considering both cars have similarish 0-60 times the difference seemed way more than the quoted times.

0-60 times are never the best indicator. 30-70 or at worst 0-100 should give you a better indication of how fast it really is.

just my two pence but i believe, as a good indicator of speed you should take into account both 0-60 and 0-100 times.

eg

04 sti, 300bhp 0-60 4.5 secs, 0-100 12.5 secs

escort rs turbo, 250bhp 0-60 in 6 secs, 0-100 in 11 secs

i bet the rst absolutly flying once its got going

I think the E36 EVO does 0-60 in 5.2 and 0-100 in 12.2

I'd agree with RR on the 'true' 320bhp classic

I had a non evo e36 M3 and it was vertually identical to my work mates WRX import (which was running full de-cat, Jap map running 1.3 bar! and circa 290bhp) all the way to the top speed.

Subaru 'felt' quicker but the m3 would have a standard WRX beaten IMO and an Evo M3 would have beaten my mates modded WRX IMO.

I had a go against an e36 M3 Evo in my classic WRX wagon (running 1bar) and it went past me like I was standing still.

Going like for like in the power output stakes my STI V7 Wagon (bugeye) has a TSL 333 conversion and i had a play up with an E46 M3 with AC Schnitzer goodies on (exhaust, ECU , inlet and suspension) and i blitzed him on the A41 through the twistys and the straights, mind you the most i got upto was 120 before the road ran out. When i pulled into the shell garage he pulled in and we had a chat, he was gutted to be done in especially by an estate(his quote) but blamed his tyres as needing to be replaced......

He must be having a laugh....surely?? If not, I bet Porsche, Ferrari and all the other car manufacturers are gutted they didn't employ him as the chief technical designer.

M3 Evo would hammer any standard scoob to 140. WR1, will be close however would still be the Beamer.

The M3 in whichever form always seem to attract stupid comments and the "I hammered one in my standard >blah< on a straight and twisties and he was trying".

test drove a non-evo m3 a few years ago now and remember being totally unimpressed with it. it was probably faster than it felt( though at that time my clio williams i had then felt just as quick) but it was such a boring dull drive that to be honest id rather drive a"slower" car that at least feels more exciting to drive

Any scoob will waste an M3........ up to about 30.... its all backwards from there

btw - 5cby - that is like having 150+ driving one wheel... or even 200+ driving one wheel - Why are those quick bikes so useless

LOL try 300 BHP/ton and RWD and then say what's the point!

Make sure you can handle it 5cby, otherwise you're right, don't bother

Wink

I know this thread is about e36s but anyways...

Reminds me of the time a few years back, I found myself in the outside lane, with a slower car in front. Behind was a newer bmw (couldn't tell which from the mirrors), and a classic UK scooby behind that - all queuing up.

When the car in front moved over, I gently upped the pace to 120ish (Mk2 golf gti 16v), the beemer was there as was the scooby, I pulled over and the e46 M3 shot passed like I was standing still, the scoob chased but was much slower (in a different league really).

Still bought a scooby as it's not all straight line speed (and <cough> - can't afford an M3).
