Passats W8 - the fastest depreciating car on the British market, I believe. Not that fast, don't handle that well, do 15mpg, it'll lose 50% of its value in the next year. Hmmm, not so much of a bargain!

My dad test drove one, nicely built and solid, probably faster than it felt at the time but quite a heavy car and deffo a cruiser, not a sports saloon. Could be a bargain but not at £15k+... I saw a 51 plate go on ebay for less than £10k!

Saw one of these in blue last week, back of car looks good with the quad pipes & loads of chrome trim, no image though, be worth about £5k by five years of age & will be very pricey to service that lump if VW normal prices are
anything to go by.
I believe VW stopped sales after only 18 months in the UK too.....

I never understood why VW tries to do big luxury cars... How many Phaetons did they sell? Still I guess they just test out the platforms before putting Audi badges on them...

The only Passat worth getting is the 2.5 V6 TDi, tonnes of torque and 30-40 to a gallon plus its basically the flagship (along with the W8). 1.9 TDi 150's are worth a look and return 40-50 to a gallon. Petrol Passats are just too slow and lose too much money.

0-60 is more like 6.3 according to parkers and 6.5 according to Evo.

yes, i saw that 'fastsaloons' website and they seem to think the 190bhp v6 passat is faster than the 275bhp W8 I think they must calculate their figures as they've got the weight down at well over 1800kg which is about 300kg too much.

You removed my comments about the W8- firstly VW don't just test platforms then merely stick an Audi badge on them. Only an complete idiot would say that, in fact one did.
Regarding the W8 as I SAID BEFORE they are flawed in their design and what is the point in a Q car that isn't very fast and looks no different to a 1.8 or 2.0 to the uninitiated.

The 2.5 V6 diesel is an old design and is no better than the 1.9 diesels so they aren't worth bothering with either.

Er, that's EXACTLY the point of a Q car, surely

I think my performance stats relate to an auto version, as you can see it picks up the pace top end and manages to crack 155 under 30 seconds which is comendable - but up to 100 mph it is fairly poor - on a par with the V6 actually ?

You handily missed out the "isn't very fast" part of my comment. Why? Without that I'd agree with you but as I put it there your point is what exactly?

A Q car that isn't very fast and looks like a low end model- isn't a Q car.

Well if a car with 180bhp per tonne 'isn't very fast' then a Subaru turbo WRX 'isn't very fast' then either as it's down at 161bhp per tonne.

6.3 to 60 looking at TESTED figures rather than calculated ones (that think the car is 1800+ kilos rather than 1500+) Think the 100 is around 15/16.

I will agree, not lightning fast but as quick as a Scooby once moving.

Can't you read? I missed out the "and isn't very fast" because of post 12, but clearly, we differ on our views of what is fast. Regardless, the whole point of a Q car is that no-one other than anoraks can tell it from the cooking model, hence your comment is way wide of the mark.

Either way, you're clearly on a mission to annoy, so the 'ignore' button will now be deployed.

Ignore if you must. Still on with the debate obviously a Q car isn't meant to be distinguishable from something slow. They are also meant to be fast which is why my comment was correct. You sound like you are trying to tell me what a Q car is when I already know. I just don't think the W8 qualifies because it's pretty slow.

OK, so a car that has 180bhp/tonne, does 60 faster than most hot hatches, once moving will be as quick or quicker than a WRX is slow then?

Fair enough, have it your way. I think everyone can decide for themselves as to whether this is quick or not.

Stop fighting!

The W engines never really caught on it seems - Volkswagen caught a cold with the things. Apart form weighing a lot and drinking loads fuel, are there any other serious flaws with them?

0-60 in 6.3 seconds is plenty quick enough by modern car standards. This would make it live with a CTR, Mini Cooper, 330i etc etc. I think this car was aimed at buyers of the BM 540, or the Merc 430, but as a cheaper alternative.

Considering that it has a whole load of equipment inside aswell, I think that it's quite an impressive Q car. If it was debadged, then you wouldn't know it from a Diesel to a low performance petrol. It doesn't have any spoliers, side skirts or fancy alloys, so surely this quantifies this car as a "Q car".

Along with this car, you'd get a solid, well built car that has excellent space inside, a certain exclusivity as there are'nt many about. Granted the prices drop faster than a Dutch wh0res pants, and it might be a little heavy on fuel. But this car is built to last, and is for more long tem ownership.

But you can't complain about 275bhp, top end 155 limited, 4wd, full leather and all the toys you can shake a stick at!!
