Post Looking to buy a VW Golf Match 1.4 - Advice appreciated.

Going to see a VW Golf Match 1.4 2003 for the son of a friend on Thursday and I would appreciate any views on the asking price of £6900 for a car that has done 39,000 miles. Also, when the timing belt is normally renewed and anything else I should be looking for regarding this model apart from the usual HPI checks etc. It is a private sale BTW.

They are quite poor engines, and suffer from lots of oil leaks. Other than that it is the basics really. Call VW and ask if any had been recalled etc...........

They are very underpowered though. I would personally look for a SDI or a 1.6 - both of which are much better to drive, and proabably as cheap to pick up run and insure etc..

Thanks for the reply Andy. I totally agree with what you said and think the car in question is probably overpriced. The alternatives you have listed look a far better choice and show what is available. Thanks again.

I had a Golf Match 1.6 (2003) with the 110 bhp engine and that still felt way underpowered , I bought it thinking it would be as quick as Golf GTI I had 20 years prevous (same power ) didnt realise it was twice as heavy

Still a nice car though I just loved the attention to detail and build quality , I also had the 1.4 before that and liked that better strangely enough , but that was in Jazz Blue my favourite all time colour for a car
