Default driveshaft query

I have an old Audi 80 as a bit of a project, its the 2.6 v6 and it had a couple of jobs needing doing, there was a clonking from the driveshaft, I have stripped it down and the near side outer gaiter is in bits, grese everywhere, the inner is fine, have separated it from the hub and removed whats left of the old gaiter, the universal joint seems fine, i.e. it moves in all directions and I cant detect any play in it, so does this mean its ok ?

will fitting a new gaiter full of clean grease quieten it down ?
