FOCUS ST170 IS A RAPID MACHINE !!!!!
Or so some numpties believe.........
right this was a classic encounter and has made my day
i came out of the gym in st helens today and was stopped at a traffic light waiting to pull out onto the east lancs rd (dual carriage way)
the guy in front of me was in what i thought was a diesel fiesta. there were 2 lanes with the ability to go right in either of them. he was revving his engine and crawling forward he was in the outside lane and i was directly behind him. the lights eventually turned green and he set off at speed. I was in my golf 2.0 tdi. he immediately pulled into the left lane so we were side by side at the next set of lights. He wound down his window and asked me if i was trying to race him. I replied that i wasnt but i would from the lights if he wanted to. (childish i know ) anyway he looked at my car and exploded saying in a loud voice that didnt i know he was in a 170 brake car and that it would leave my car for dead. I replied that i thought it was a diesel like mine . He said that i must be joking and with distain in his voice said that he would leave me for dead. I didnt go for it from the lights as he looked like he was a nutter and i didnt fancy getting out of the car and knocking someone out. At the next lights he wound down his window and the conversation went like this.
FOCUS- "see son its rapid, its got 6 gears"
ME -"i know so has this "
FOCUS- "were you trying"
ME (honestly) "no i wasnt "
well the lights changed and i flew off . He moved into the fast lane and sat behind me close to my bumper it was a close thing until i reached 100/110
he couldnt keep up and when i slowed to turn off gave me the ****** salute and shouted abuse
i laughed all the way home

and yes he was giving his car death trying to get past me hahah

they are disappointingly slow for a 168bhp (i think thats right), car and you have to thrash the nuts off it too...seems he missed the point, its not straight line speed in a focus its handling and chassis feedback where it shines...

oh he was a clown !!!
i thought i was going to have to punch the nutter as he was mortally offended that i would consider racing him in a lowly diesel. he quoted the 170 brake output twice and told me to look at the badge on the back of the car!!!!
i hit 125/130 and he was a distant speck in my rear mirror hahaha
once moving the turbo diesels are nippy
to be honest i dont condone racing and have only done the traffic light grand prixs ahandful of times but i bet i ruined that guys day. I bet he thought he was in the fastest car on the road. My old wrx in standard 260bhp form would have destroyed him

What a fool.I think ford have really let themselves down on the performance side of things in the last few years(apart from the obvious gt40),even the rs focus was a bit tame.

There junk
I purchased a new one about 8 months ago, kept it for 3 months & hated every bit of it, cut my losses & bought the merc, but honestly they are crap without any shadow of a doubt
They are honestly one of the worst cars ford have ever built, it was also never out of the garage as it had an ECM fault that the dealers or ford wouldnt admit to
Total junk
Though they will do 135mph on the speedo once you rag the nuts off them

Oh my God, I hope this was no one of FFOC - I'm embarrassed.
I try to avoid beating people off the lights if I can, I only embarrass myself by wheel spinning everywhere, it's usually better to just let people think they've beaten you

The problem is, people dont understand power to weight and they think 170bhp is a lot, but when the car weighs 1270kg or whatever, its nothing.
I love our Focus though, great car, but I did hear the horror stories about the 170's.

oh to be a fly on the wall when the focus guy gets to the pub
bet he retells the story along the lines of "their is a nitrous powered golf lurking around st helens you know!!"
it narrowly beat me and you know how rapid the 170 is !!!!

They're absolutely ****e..! Ford brought it out to compete with the Clio 172 (hence the 170 bit) however it was a dead duck from the off. Instead of turning out to be a raw (drivers car) hot hatch it was more of a warm cruiser. Maybe it was a stop gap for the RS as that was way over due, then again that had it's problems on the road..!
Maybe the Fiesta ST (150..?) may be better, but again the hot hatch scene has moved up a few more steps..! Ford always seem behind the game in recent years..!
I did have a Focus 1.7 (?) TDI on hols last year and that was quite impressive.

We have a Focus 1.8 Zetec and its fantastic. 2 years, 20k miles and never missed a beat. I drive it quite hard and its great, much more reliable than other stuff i've had.
Also doesnt rattle or squeak, and running costs are low as well.

The 1.8 is miles better than the ST170 due to the fact that you dont expect anything from it & it performs well
The ST170 is plain & utter junk !!

Maybe the meant the original poster of this thread, who pulled up behind a Focus ST170 and thought it was a Fiesta Diesel. Not that similiar are they, espicially when one says Feists, the other Focus, and the latter also having a ST170 badge on the back.....

I test drove a ST170 last year and I think you are being a bit unfair on it TBH
I found the handling excellent and the power adequate but only adequate I must admit, it was in no way gutless or slow just did'nt give the thrills of a scoob
not a bad all round car, I certainly would'nt be dissapointed to be driving one every day, I think the driver of the Focus is the one we should be aiming the slates at
remember not everyone buys a car for outright performance, but clearly if you buy a car like an ST170 or even a WRX (which I own) and go around thinking its the fastest thing on earth then you deserve to be beaten off the lights and laughed at by everyone
again just my 2p worth
