Nice car - but thats it. Not a GTI in any sense of the known badge. People carriers can out drag and handle these cars. They also are reasonably poor on fuel for such a painfully slow car.

Parkers reckon it does 115bhp, 0-60 in 9.8sec, 37mpg. Theres a lot worse! And dont you reckon i could sell at a profit? if its in good nick that is. People pay through the nose for those three little letters!

My wife has a N reg MK3 8V and I agree what everyone says, it is not a GTi as it is frankly too slow and heavy but what it is a GOOD car, more like a 2.0ltr GT, I disagree about the handling however, it may roll a bit too much but it has ooodles of grip and can be hustled along at a fair old pace if you want it to, obviously not fast compared to Scoobys. Also well built, safe and reliable. I would recommend one. I have decided to keep my wife's until it dies, although I doubt that is going to happen anytime soon!
ps £1000! I think it is a lot of car for that kind of money, the MK4, fyi, is essentially the same car!

My sister has the 16 valve mark 3 and I was very disappointed in it My wife used to own a mark 2 16 valve and that was fantastic, after driving a mark 3 16 valve I can only assume that the 8 valve would be shocking. They make good cruisers but they're not perfomance cars at all

Hmm... well thats fairly disappointing! I need a car for a 60-70 mile commute (there and back), along a dual carriageway everyday. So if you say its a good cruiser, then thats ok i suppose. I just want something a bit more solid and sportier after the Panda, and currently AX ive been driving! So i guess ANYTHING will seem like good performance!!!

I had a 100hp VTR and it would walk away from mk3's - my mate had a 90hp at the same time and that could pull away from a mk3. Shame really as they are nice cars..........

The Mk2 is good on fuel, have had all the GTI's (well MK1, MK2 and MK3) and the MK2 is the best of the lot for the average driver, dont get a 5 door as they are a bit wobbly in the body dept, do a search on here, loads of MK2 related stuff.

I had the Ibiza Gti 16v, same engine as the Mk3 with 5hp more (ouu) but it weighed the same as a Polo, much more like a real GTI than the MK3. You can get them for around £1500ish.

My old mk3 gti was solid, no rust, good spec, reliable and very good on fuel, all I wanted after the P1. I lowered it on the deck with new bushes all round too and went well round bends, just got bored so quick and bought a Rb5.
I bought the golf to be cheap, but have owned 2 Mk1's Gti's and 2 16v Mk2 gti 16vs one with a turbo conversion and 2 Golf vr's, but enjoyed revving the nuts off the 16v's. Not sure there is any good mk2's left now in gti 16v format without a very high price. I had a clio 16v which the h/g went on after I sold it to my bro, the ibiza 16v sounds a good choice after thinking about it.

I've had a mk3 GTi 8v for Six years now and run it as originally my only car before a MY00 scoob, then never got round to selling it, then run it as a daily car while i had an Elise then as my only car again as i regularly drive a lot of other classic/sports cars to keep me amused.
It's never gone wrong and has done 150,000 miles plus now without any bother. Changed the shocks/bushes for better ones (cheap from German and swedish) when the originals wore out around 80k and now it handles a lot better. It's never gonna be quick (and i've never been bothered about that) but it's a great every day all rounder and still does 40mpg. Comes with a decent 8 speaker stereo, pas, airbag, leccy everything, decent seats/interior,10,000 mile service interval etc...i'm sure mine will do another 100,000 miles without any bother.
I'd reccomend one to anyone looking for a solid, reliable, cheap to run every day car
