I own both a 93 wrx and a 91 mr2 turbo. I prefer to drive the MR2 as it feels a better drive.

My tubby is 220bhp standard and would say it is easily quicker than a standard wrx.

It pulls ALL the way to the redline from very low revs with vitually not turbo lag at all.

Does your MR2 have a remap for UK fuel or is it not needed? Also what is approximate MPG of MR2. I am guessing it is better than Scooby in standard form.

I had an MR2 Turbo and loved every minute of it.

So much fun, can get the back end out on demand and if you get the t-bar model can have semi open top motoring within seconds. Moved onto a Supra now but still would own an MR2 if i could afford both!

Just my 2p!

I had a Rev 1 MR2 Turbo.

Can easily be tuned with nothing more than a grainger valve and good filter.

Get a mongoose exhaust and your laughing, no need for ecu upgrade at that stage.

Because it is quite light it excelerates well but you need to be very carefull in the wet!!!

Remember seeing jap video clip of a MR2 turbo & STi shootout over 1/4, STi won but not by much. Wish I could find the website as they had a hold load of shootouts.

i've had a MR2 GTS which is the twin entry turbo model and it was seriously quick, great fun to drive cos you can get it sideways very easily, found it a great car just thirsty on the petrol.

i have recently just sold my rev 2 turbo and have got to say they are very quick cars even from a standing start power delivery is very smooth and they just seem to keep going. Not too bad on fuel either as long as you dont drive it flat out all the time.
They can be a bit tricky in the wet.
The only reason i sold it was because theres not a lot of luggage space and i was beaten by an sti. The other thing to take into consideration is dont buy one thats been lowered too much as they become very bumpy but saying that i would definately have another one they are a lot of car for the money

Here's the MR2 Turbo vs Integra Type R:

http://www.sportsvogn.no/video/MR2/MR2_vs_Integra.avi

Cant find the one vs the WRX now, but the difference was quite small at the end.

Do a search!

I've had a few, as have other members on here and it's all listed on previous threads.

Great car if driving and controlling the car's what you like. If you want the pace but want to feel like a good driver then get a scoob. The MR2 T will wrap you around a tree if you're a poor driver but think you're not.

I thought that and then span my 1st MR2 T into a sand dune! Very unforgiving and easy to lose the **** in these.

At the end of the day its throttle control, riding a superbike on full tilt makes you appreciate it more. Sliding back end and counter steering is nice show boating but a bit dubious on the public highway if you mess it up!

I have not worked out the MPG, someone said to me you get about 44 motorway driving. I don't know how true that is.

I do the same sort of miles each week. In the Subaru I have to fill the tank every second day. In the MR2 I probably put about a tank and a half in.

The MR2 is the first car I have had and not felt the need to change anything about it ! Every car I have had I have had to modify something. I even have the standard stereo in it.

The only downside to the car is it has 2 seats, which is a bit of an inconvenience sometimes. Also there is not much space if you need to carry anything in it.

I would deffo recommend you test drive one, especially while the weather is still good.

It's not so much throttle control as knowing your motor.

These are more **** happy than the old Capris you hear about, but require far more control to drive.

Drive one in the wet..................

35mpg off turbo on runs (so call it 30 as the whoosh is tempting) and 15-18 around town. The most I ever got was near 40 on a big, night run from Inverness to London. The least was about 16mpg on the same run - it took 70 mins less

Had a 91 Back Tbar Turbo.. loved it..

It was identical acceleration to a mates 98 UK Impreza Turbo..
I then added bleed valve and FCD and boost to 15psi and passed the Impreza no trouble.. that was with some Jap crap exhaust that was fitted to it already.. sounded the dogs..

I got two mountains bikes and a few bags of clothes in mine when I moved house.. lol.
Remove wheels from mountain bike, remove passenger T-bar section and lift bike in, place wheels on top and seat belt it.. pad handle bars on second bike and place on engine cover behind rear screen and seat on spoiler and strap! lol

Wonderful car and very reliable.. gear box was particularly nice.

Cambelt went at 95mph.. new one fitted and away it went.. the failure caused no damage.

The transformation from semi wild and rear end wagging in the dry to "Oh my god I just 360'd" in the wet was the only down point.. which was an up point when in fun mode..
I think perhaps traction control for when you are tried and don't want to play might have been a good option.

Look at www.mr2dc.co.uk

Bargain at prices these days

MPG is best not mentioned.. lol I am sure it would be good MPG if you were able to avoid slamming the foot to the floor but I never could.

Oh and if you want to mod one then try www.fensport.co.uk

They are a 'non interference' engine, pistons and valves cannot actually meet when the belt goes.

Very quick cars, but as said.. **** end happy in the wet and no luggage space.

Celica GT-Four ST205 cures those things. Proper 4 seater, 4wd, same twin entry turbo engine and can be whacked up to 300bhp for about £400 of mods.

Also a lot rarer

"i've had a MR2 GTS which is the twin entry turbo model"

like every single turbo mr2 then

"Very quick cars, but as said.. **** end happy in the wet and no luggage space.

no luggage space? the previous owners of my mr2s must've added the boot as aftermarket upgrades

300bhp for £400, same as the mr2 then

4wd and slower than the mr2

just run it on optimax and you'll be fine

Not in the wet they arent Oh, and theres several ST205s running 1/4 mile runs in 12 secs

Likewise... like to see you get more than 1 bag of shopping and 3 passengers in a MR2

Just pointing out that if space and seats is important then the GT4 is a more viable option

I used to have a tubby gts rev2. fab car..only ran standard boost and it still showed a lot of cars up. i recall some guy in a bmw 330 ci trying to race my humble hairdressers car and having the smile wiped off his face on the a500 when i pulled away like he was in a 316 top speed it was a genuine 150 mph plus car from the factory.

handling issues are a problem as aforementioned but i found the grip excellent..especially from a standing start. what i didn't like was the cars inability to recover from an impending spin..you would break traction and a pendulum effect would begin where it snaps opposite ways and then you have to be VERY talented to get it back into shape. only in extremes does this happen(or the wet).

get one if you are considering it...they still look fantastic for an aged design..they still turn heads, they are fast and its a chance to own a reliable 2 seater sports car(plus that turbo engine behind your head, dump valve whooshing away is a real experience) and the t bar roof just adds to the fun.

alas mine was destroyed by the next owner..totalled on the m6 when an articulated lorry ran crashed into it as the car went to overtake. i saw it on page 2 of the local newspaper and sent a shiver down my spine!

Well, we went camping in my old MR2 and managed to fit in a 5 man tent, 2 folding chairs, BBQ, gas hob thing, 2 full bags of luggage, camping tools, 6 pairs of shoes and more.

Its amazing how much fits under the bonnet at the front, and how much fits behind the seats.

2 seats also gives you the advantage at family parties of not having to take the old family members home
