Thoughts on a Golf VR6 as a track day car.
Up at the auctions today, a very tidy M reg, manual VR6 with 114k went through for 1500.00.
Got me thinking, a good realible motor, bullet proof 2.8 litre engine, manual gearbox and parts from virtually any breakers you care to mention. This has got to be a good track day car. Just need to strip it out to lose some weight.
Or is it a bit on the heavy side with dubious handling.
What d'ya think?

Too heavy...and the engines aren't bullet proof. After 100k plus if they haven't been looked after right then you'll get problems.
A Mk3 16V with decent suspension, brakes, and re-map/exhaust will be pushing 170bhp and a much better track proposition or fun car.

Nah!!!!! your p***ing in the wind fella!
A buddy in the trade told me they have all sorts of problems as they hit high mileages which cost a bomb to put right, which shocked me i'll admit i myself always thought they were unbreakable - apparently not.

Whatch that clarkeson DVD/video that has richard burns and the touring car driver in. They test a load of cars 550, 355, R33, Elise, 106 GTi etc and they basically rubbish the VR6.

The Corrado handled the best IMHO. MK3 Golf bloated ... too heavy... A mk2 golf with a 2.9 VR6 in the front... understeered like a b1tch but great in a straight line
MK1s.... etc etc best VW IMHO was my old MK2 with Audi TT engine. Light weight & 280bhp.
Ahhhh VW's...... got be hankering after one with all this chat...

"Rechipping - including rolling road time, mapping, fitting, 'before/after' plots of power and torque, test drive. Workshop time about 3 hours. Performance gains approx. 12-15 bhp with much better throttle response and a smoother drive."

Get a Clio 1.8 16v and put a Megane or Williams 2.0 bottom end in it. Stripped out they run mid to low 14's all day long and handle very well. plus they are cheap to buy and convert

IIRC the Mk3 16v was detuned slightly to give more of a performance gap between that and the flagship VR6. Chipped and the 16v will get a healthy increase in power

i currently own a 97 VR6 and i think it would be to heavy as a track car.
engine is to heavy for the chassis quite often get the tail wagging under heavy breaking which can be very scary.
people will have scare storys about any car it's just ur luck people will always tell u about one incident they have heard of the very rarely mention the cars good points.
my car has a 6-2-1 manifold, induction kit, full stainless exhaust and rr at 205bhp with 185 lb/torque. my car is also lowered and handles like a dream!
seriously quick car from 80-120 and pretty bomb proof regardless of what people say.
if i were u id by a v-tec of sort read on the honda website 40million v-tec blocks built and not one failure!!!! now nobody can argue with that

The CRX is a great track car, but most people track the 16v as it is lighter even when stripped and the engine is well suited to the track, but in truth its probs because the 16v are cheaper
