Hi there,

My sister and brother in law are after a new family car for around 5 - 6K. Image and outright performance are not imoportant so there are looking at the mass market brands. Ford, Rover, Renault, Toyota, Nissan, Citreon, Vauxhall, etc.

Key criteria is low running costs, plenty space (2 kids under 3 years old), reliability, practicality and comfort. My brother in law enjoys driving and would like something with decent power and sharp handling (relatively)

The mondeo 2.0 zetec 5 door gets my vote. They have a good rep for handling and with 145 PS the performance should be respectable. Being a fleet favourate has a big impact on residuals but that just means better bargains for the second hand buyer.

Any advice or opinions?

I had the Mondeo 1.8 (later shape 2001) for a bit, superb car, cant go far wrong with them, I have a Saab 9-3 at the mo and thats pretty good as well though the Mondeo was more modern, it does however have a lot more performance (than the 1.8 and the 2.0) and is no worse on fuel, you need a V6 Mondeo to equal it.
