Default Cheapest Horsepower increase available

What car provides the biggest increase in bhp for the least money, I nominate my 2001 Saab 9-3, for a sensible grandad wagon with only 150 bhp it moves pretty well, cant wait to get this done, an extra 75 BHP, thats a 50% gain on standard. Its not a misprint or flase claim as the other tuners report similar gains on this engine, must be seriously detuned from the factory.

http://www.maptun.com/webshop/produc...=324&compare=1

It Works out at 7.36 per hp gained

I am sure somebody will recollect a Fiat Uno where you just put a tighter wastegate spring on or something, I dont really count those manual boost controllers as they are generally crap !

That is pretty good.

When I get my 9000 Aero a stage 1 (225bhp to 270bhp). It works out at £9.24 (including VAT) per bhp.

and £7.05 per lb/ft. .......god I'm bored!

The old man's got a 9000 aero with full s/s exhaust, uprated actuator, airfilter & atmos dump valve (which is odd, as he's deaf as a post!). Next thing is the stage 3 Maptun software, which delivers 290 bhp & a stonking 320 lb/ft of torque!

Tried to persuade him to get a disco-potato like some of the 9000 nutters currently have fitted, however he thinks it would be TOO much. Age has finally got the better of him!

A large, steep cliff should do the job for that barge.

Seat Leon Cupra R 210bhp-275bhp. (Jabba Remap £475. Revo £525)

200lbft-300lbft

65bhp for £475 (£7.30 per bhp)
100lbft for £475 (£4.75 per lbft)

Jabba often do 10% discounts so a remap can cost £427.50 making it (£6.58 per bhp and £4.28 per lbft)

This makes the LCR the biggest gain so far eclipsing the saab 9-3!

Audi S3 210 also!

turbotroll. Whats a disco-potato?

Kammy. Oi!
To be fair they handle like a barge but all you exotic car owners watch out if we, 9000 aero owners, catch you in the 50-70 range!

Just to add. I don't know if this counts but on my old 9000 2.3 Turbo I bought a second hand catalytic converter bypass pipe for £40. This freed up 10 bhp. = £4.00 per bhp

It's a Garrett GT28RS turbo, good for around 350bhp. A few 9000 owners have fitted them (harder valve springs & green giant injectors needed) with scary results! Spool up is the same as a TD04, and as you'll know the low-down hit from the TD04 on a standard aero from 30-70 is astonishing; now add another 125 ponies & 150 lb/ft and you'll get the idea!

Hi Turbotroll

Ah. I had read lots of articles relating to that turbo and the associated increase in performance on several saab forums. The term disco-potato was new to me though. You learn something new everyday. Thanks.

I think a stage 3 would be sufficient for me too..im getting on a bit too though!

Only problem with the Cupra R from my point of view is that I would need ten grand at least to buy one, but that wasnt the point of the thread, I suppose its only the 210/225 models that chip to that level.

I drove a chipped S3 and it was really quick.

Even cheaper would be the Saab 900, standard was 185 bhp, you can buy one for 1500 quid, chip it for less (about 400) and have a genuine 225 bhp car for less than two grand, fast,

in a straight line !

Are we talking real 900 or GM 900??

Also, for the non-saab believers out there can I point out that I bought my aero (225 bhp out of the box) for £1200! with a 6 month warranty!

I was talking GM 900, not that knowledgeable out the old ones, though I like them they are just that bit too old and apparently a lot heavier on fuel than the later models.

Reno 5 GT Turbo 120bhp as std... upped boost via actuator to 15psi and the price of a jet in the carb.... 50p. big clap for the IC £2.... total cost £2.50 for 30bhp increase

I work that out to about 8p per bhp.

Is that two fifty plus the cost of an engine rebuild a month or so later ?

I would imagine a decent 5 turbo is a rare commodity these days, considering they havent made them for what about 13 or 14 years and they were not made that well in the first place.

I do however still like them but haven't forgiven my mate for getting one back in 1990 and destroying my Golf GTI (and my ego) .

hey. the reno 5 is as reliable as any other car Ive owned (including the impreza) very cheap to run and get power from. £50 on a set of rollers can have it set up running a fair bit of boost safely. try spending £50 on any other car and see where it gets you. the beauty of the carb

Seriously, owned a 5 and still do since I passed my driving test in 1997. Only a couple of things have ever gone wrong. namely oil seals etc. never had a head gasket go on me and been running 20psi for ages on 1. modified renaults are fine. aslong as theyre maintained well you should get trouble free motoring

Have also encountered several cars where a small amount of time with an iron bar allows you to gut the catalyst and release perhaps 10bhp for no money. Admittedly, if the car is newer than a certain age, there might be a certain issue come MOT time . . .

Several older TDi's of old where the wastegate rod trick allegedly worked. There are often a few induction mods that release a small amount of power for no money too. E.g. removing the inlet resonator on a scoob for a couple of bhp, you used to be able to get alleged ~8bhp (definitely a noticeable difference to drive) out of previous shape V6 Vectras by removing two blanks from the airbox (fitted to go with some Euro fast warm-up regulation or something).

In all cases, free power. In no cases, an extra 50% for cheap, which is quite impressive.
