Its easier to import a Merc than buy it in the UK.
Just phone one of the big German dealers, most have UK/Import divisions. Biggest issue is making sure you get the correct UK spec with all those 3 digit options.
Its not as good as it used to be and resales are lower

Imports can still yield savings and the huge benefit is a much reduced delivery time, especially on the cars with strong demand.
I'd recommend http://www.importcompany.net - I've used them before and have nothing but good things to say about them.

Euro imported mercs can prove a nice saving on UK list prices, as mentioned the spec is chosen of a list of 3 digit sales codes e.g 810 = Bose sound system (or harmann kardon on some latest models).
The good thing about an imported merc is that there is no problem acheiving parts for them as with some jap motors etc. If you do spot a merc you're interested in and wanna know a full spec, grab the chassis number (bottom right hand corner of windscreen on post '95ish cars) and mail me i'll tell you the full spec, build date etc
Regards

Sorry to be pedantic the new s class (W221) will be either available as an S350 petrol or S320cdi no such thing as an S350cdi but . I am back in work tomorrow morning so if i remember i will try and drag a 'standard' spec off the poota or sales info.
Now make yourself comfortable on edge of seat 'til i return, possibly with nothing (mercs are **** at giving out info to dealers!)
