Escort Cosworth opinions
Hi there, Im just wondering if any of you lot have drove/had a Escort Cosworth.
I am concidering getting one as they have always been a child hood fave and depreciation isnt an issue,
but.. I have had various Scoobs in the past (Uk turbo, 94wrx, Sti type r v5) and i am wondering that i may not appreciate the Cossie as much as i should because i would be comparing them to a Scoob.
But on the other hand i havent had Scoob for near on 12 months so i may appreciate anything with a bit of power (been driving a M reg Suziki Vitara).
So can anybody give me their thoughts on the matter as i would appreciate it alot.
Thanx

Next door neigbour has just bought a completly standard N-plate Escort Cosworth, even though its near enough 10 years old it still makes me smile everytime he takes it out his garage. And the paintwork is in better condition then my 04 WRX.
How much do decent Escort Cosworths go for?

Prices dont seem to change much between early reg ones and late reg ones, cus the early ones had a Big Turbo so they are the Tuners Favorite.

I had an Escort cosworth a few years ago , and its the best looking car I have ever had , you certainly got noticed in it.
As a standard car they are not that good , the brakes are really crap , people moan about the early impreza's having 2 pot calipers and 277mm discs , the Escort has 278mm but with single pot calipers !
The gearbox's are poor , the ratio's are crap , and if your tune them 3rd gear can give problems , my car was 350bhp and in 3 years I broke 1 gearbox , others do much more ,
And they vibrate under load at about 1500 revs , which is anoying and you learn to drive it over that then
But - I fitted 18" Rondels , lowered the suspension , fitted a big disc kit and tuned the engine , and it was the biggest fun I ever had in a car , the engines if done right are bomb proof , forged pistons steel crank and rods as standard , they will take 350bhp quite easily

I've allways wanted one but can't help thinking I'd be dissapointed after owning various Jap machinery (gtir's, wrx's, rx7, skyline gtr, evo's etc)
I've only ever owned saphire cossies (had 4wd too), but pretty sure they're not a lot different to drive (handling, engine/gearbox... mt75 iirc?) to an Escort. Standard power is pretty low, gearbox is nasty (as mentioned) with my saph's I spent a lot of time worrying they were going to break, got bored of topping them up with oil, etc etc
I remember years ago going from a saph to a gtir and thinking how well it handled, now I think of the gtir as one of the worst handling cars I've owned (so I'd prob be very shocked driving a cossie again)
If it was my money it'd be going on an Evo, I love the way they are very reliable at around 350bhp, don't use oil, handle better, etc
Saying that though if I won the lottery a couple of Escort Cosworths would be part of my collection

To be honest mate six months ago i would have said exactly the same as you, but imo dont think the escort cosworth shape isnt dating as fast as some other cars in its era.

Same goes for the Lancia Delta, Toyota Supra and Mazda RX7 all cars which still make you smile when you see one drive past.

Go get a early model Escort Cos (with the T35), even a Monte Ltd Edition if you want something a little more exclusive (although in reality it was little more than a run out model), get some high quality suspension on it, 6 pot AP's, and then tune it as high as you want (just be careful with the gearbox). £ for £, you'll never be able to tune a Scoob or Evo to the same level of BHP, but more importantly, they'll never match the mid-range torque that a cossie can (and therefore in gear acceleration).
My 3 favourite colours are Aubergine(Unfortunately only available in the later T25 guise), Jewel violet (Monte Ltd Edition) and the earliest blue (it was either Pacifica or Imperial - whatever was earlier).
And all this praise from someone who adores his Scoobies.

If its just going to be a weekend toy think about a Group A rally car(road legal). You can pick up nice examples for 12-14k. Full motorsport shell, cage, AP brakes, bag tank, rose jointed etc etc. Engines often running a 32mm restrictor but you can easily remap it / change the injectors and see a healthy 350bhp. They often have very short diffs and will hit the limiter at 120mph, but will get to 100mph fairly quickly! My mate got an ex Ford-MS reccie car for about 12k I think, had all the above plus anit lag, water injection, full fire system and spare gear box, proper spare body work, 3 or 4 diffs, 4 sets of wheels with wets, slicks and cut slicks etc etc. Amazing value. He sold it 12 months later for what he paid, I was going to buy it off him - wish I had now!
