I am selling the scoob and getting a diesel estate. I want something that is good on diesel but has performance too. I would be interested in consumption figures, power, handling,and load bay space and interior space. I prefer RWD, but you never know.

BMW 330d Touring has got to be the daddy....Mines 270bhp and 400 torque and does 150 all day....Alan..And still gets 45-50mpg on cruise

That isn't standard though is it? Iam looking at good fuel economy at about 90 mph and around town too. But if that is right whatyear model is it.

It's a 2003 model,and your right it's not standard.It has a tuning box fitted and a K and N filter,but still delivers around 38 mpg around town,which ain't to shabby,if you do a lot of 90mph trips it will get into the high 40's and the performance and handling are really good,and it's rear wheel drive...........Alan

530d Sport Touring - love mine to bits. Big and heavy, but that's what I like in a car, and it handles extremely well. It's not the biggest estate in the world - certainly smaller than the equivalent E class - but big enough for almost all normal needs. It's also a little restricted on rear legroom; then again, unless you habitually transport basketball players, this'll not be an issue for you.

Get around 40-42mpg usually, depending on driving. Just did a 2000 mile trip through the Alps, fully loaded, through mountain passes, so lots of low-gear, full-acceleration work. Averaged 39mpg for the whole tour, which compares to a similar trip in my similarly-powered previous car (a petrol-powered Audi A6 2.8) which managed 18mpg ........

Wifes Uncle has a new car every 2 years and has always bought BMW/Merc.

He says his last well built car was his 1995 Merc 300D. He's had two 530D tourers both were plagued by suspension problems. He rejected a Merc 300TD but the replacement wasn't much better and the car suffered from intermittant engine refinement problems.
His current car is a Merc E320CDi Estate, it's done 30k miles but is on it's 3rd Auto box, it's also had problems with electrical clitches like the parking sensors going off while driving.

He's now given up on the entire BMW/Merc thing and says his next car will be a VAG TDi Estate, either a Passat 2.0TDi or Octavia L&K 2.0TDi, he doesn't think the extra trim quality on the Audi's is worth the extra money as the running gear is the same.

He hasn't decided what he's going to do with the spare money yet. I keep hinting that he should treat the family a bit.

I was told that if you are after serious loadspace, look carefully at the 3 touring before buying it. I've heard comments that it's more of a lifestyle estate than a load-lugger - I think the wheel wells were intrusive, or summat.

Not sure on the Brand New 3 Series but the previous generation 3 Series Tourer wasn't great on load space.

Only 435litres of boot space with the seats up and 1345 with the seats down, not much width either due to the suspension and wheel arch intrusion.

Many medium sized hatchbacks do better, Octavia Hatch 560litres with seats up and 1350 with them down.
Or Octavia Estate 580 with seats up and 1620 with them down.

As Brendan has said already, forget the 3 series if you want load space
