Default Vauxhall Firenza

Has anyone seen any Vauxhall Firenzas still running. One of the few cars I still hanker after.

Oh, for youthful days and day dreaming about wish list.

Oh, and in black preferably.

£6000, they were a bit rusty of course, so most will have rotted. First car I saw with a great sounding exhaust.

Then there was an Avenger Tiger, Lotus Sunbeam and my other car I thought was really cool for a yound teen was the Scimitar GTE (fibreglass) with the 2.8 ford engine or was it a V.

Was it not a later option to get the 2.8 fuel injection engine from the Capri. My brotherinlaw had one think it was the "V". will have to talk to him about it sometime.

I don't know about that one, I only remember Scimiters having the 3 litre carb fed engine. I may be wrong though, hope someone can enlighten us?

The scimetar was one of the few funny earthed electrics like some lorries i drove (Seddon Atkins). I read once Princess Ann got one specially modded with chicken wire in layed into the fibreglass shell to aid the problem.

You should take a look over at http://www.droopsnootgroup.org.uk/
A friend from work has renovated one or two and has used his on track at Castle Combe with the local Scooby group.

Cheers

Mark

Take a look at my thread in projects

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=457185

Again, it's not a droop snoot, but I prefer the flat fronts myself.

The 'flat' front looks SOOOOOOO much better than the 'lets try and be modern but completely out of place on an curvy 60/70s shape will date in 6 months' look.

Mate of mine across the road was a superb mechanic, n restored a Droopsnoot one. It pulled up to a ton in 3rd in no time before he completely restored and modified it. 2.3ltr original lump I believe. I remember when he was ready to put the engine and front suspension in. It was a complete b1tch to do, needed 4 guys to get it all in. Oh and if you wanted to remove the headers u had to take the head off Very cool car now, so rare to find mint ones.

A friend of mine had two of these in the mid nineteen eighties, both brown 'wagons with red pinstripes (HPFs)..... They had the same rims as the Chevette HS, a set of which I skanked for my Chevette: I didnt manage to get him to part with the engine though.

I've currently got 2 x 1800 engines and a 2300 with twin Strombergs. Part of me is saying drop the V8 idea and find a Chevette HSR 16v head for the 2300. Can't decide yet

Yes! Thats what my mate did, the 16v head. It was a real beast, dont know the power output, but on the road it was pure evil, spun the wheels in all 4 gears Oh I loved the dogleg box to

On the off chance that you didnt know..... The HS engine is virtually identical to the Lotus Sunbeam / Lotus Espirit 2,200cc engine. The head is interchangable I believe. The reason was that the 'Lotus' engine was actually a 200cc over-bored development of the Vauxhall 2,000cc slant four engine. Lotus later provided the head for the 2,300cc engine developed by Vauxhall/DTV. It was ironic that in the late seventies and early eighties Chrysler/Talbot and DTV were fighting it out on the forest stages using essentially the same power plant.

Hi Simon,

I know the Lotus 907 heads have the same bore, not sure about stud pattern and water/oil galleries, been trying to find out how interchangeable they are, especially as they come up regularly on ebay and Chevette HSR heads don't.

Its that long since I 'knew' about them that I cant remember. I know that it was a very technical article that Id read..... Im pretty sure that Lotus used a completely standard slant four block though.

You could look at/research 2,000cc and 2,300cc Vauxhall slant four headgaskets. If Vauxhall didnt change the block then Im sure that theyll fit. Cunning eh?

Hoping to do an engine swap over the winter, once I get my garage built.
I managed to pick up two 3.0 24v motors on e-bay, one for £75 and one for £25!

There's a silver Droop Snoot Firenza for sale in the classifieds at the back of latest Retro Cars magazine for those that are interested.
