price for 02 106gti!! cant be right surely
ive just been offered £3500 as a part exchange price for my car, its done 50000 miles, with full service history.
Parkers quoted about 4K part exchange price up to 4500 for a decent version and about 5000 franchised dealer.
The saleman explained to me that parkers always quote higher prices and that he was using a trade guide, i'm not sure i believe him though because i'm quite friendly with my local peugeot garage and they gave me a much higher quote (it was a bit ago though so i just wanted to check my facts)
does this sound right?

He's under no obligation to give you any price other than what he wants to pay for it. He wants £3,500. You want more then you'll have to go elsewhere unless he's prepared to negotiate. Why not sell privately, you'll gain at least £1000 on any p/ex deal. Remember, the guides are just that, a guide, not a true valuation. They are also unavoidably out of date. e.g. last month they were trading in at £4k, this month £3.5 etc. which will be reflected in the next edition of the guides.

I hope to trade my car in next time - it is soooooo much easier. It may cost you to get rid through the trade, but it makes life easier and that is what you are paying for.

CAP and Glass's both quote differing prices; most people aren't aware that CAP Black Book and Parker's prce guide were (for years) published by the same company. As a result of this Parkers prices were always within £25 (on the trade-in and delaer prices) of CAPs. Traders usually deride Parkers prices but they used to be very accurate.... Still; look through www.autorader.co.uk and read the trader's adverts and form your own opinion about the intelect of most..........

The Peugout garage will give better prices, they will try sell the car for more and they are getting repeat business.
Parkers online quotes 4k and thats with 30k miles. I would say the garage doesn't really fancy it. I've heard worse quotes, you need to consider the overall deal you are getting on the next car.
Doesn't sound too out of line.

Does any really expect a good deal when they trade in a car unless it is agianst something of hig value with a huge differential in costs.
The deal will aim to get if for trade or less even if Parkers figures are higher it still does not mean the car will be easy to shift on or a newr model may be due for immentant release.
It is not just the punter that wants a deal.
I would never expect to get close to a vehicles value at trade in and would always opt to sell privately.

i could get rid of that for 4k by the time wendesday comes around
look on places like 106 rallye register, its not a rallye, but full of enthusiasts, SSC.co.uk or .com, again, loads of enthusiasts
i wouldnt take anything less than 4.5k for that, if you email pics and a full spec of the car, i will see what i can do. jx@newcombe.org
cheers

You're just like the bloke further down the page with the Ka. You want a certain amount of money on PX, and when you don't get offered it, you are affronted.
Get over it, the Trade pay Trade prices. You dont have to accept it, you could even haggle. But if you REALLY want the other car, bite your lip and say OK. Or walk out and sell the car yourself.

Last time I bought a car I was offered £1K under book price as a trade in.
I queried this and we had quite a detailed discussion about book prices. The bottom line was that book prices, I was told, were always over.
I paused for a minute and told him that I now understood how the book price worked and he was now happy..... until I queried why the car he wanted to sell me was £1.5K over book......

What do some of you think car dealerships are? Charities?
Business is business. Buy low, sell high. Buy as low as you think you can get away with. Sell as high as you think you can get away with. There are no other rules.
Dealers know the "issues" people have in selling cars privately.....but they know some people hate the process so much that they'll take a lower trade-in price. Plus, there's a glut of 2nd hand cars. Why would a dealer risk paying top trade price for a car that may be difficult to move on quickly, and that may sit on a forecourt until March/April, when it would be worth hundreds less.
If YOU were the dealer and it was YOUR business, what would YOU do?
