volvo looks like it should be carrying coffins, but not driven one
touraeg is a little soft in the suspension but great engine and nice interior, just dont even think about the residuals!
range rover sport, best interior, good engine and handling, the perfect choice for relaxed wafting but still pushing on occasionally
x5,looking a little dated(but still grrreat IMHO) and residuals not as rock solid as they were(ie they actually depreciate now) comfortable, best handling of the above, superb engine and reasonable running costs
the only others id suggest would be the new mercedes m class, not tried one but nice interior or the audi Q7,looks a bit big but will be beautifully made.
id go with the x5 or range rover myself with the merc close behind

Will you actually be going off road???? Or will it be strictly on road all the time?? If off road forget the X5 its not an off roader in the slightest. For this reason though its probably better than the rest on the tarmac. If never going on the muddy stuff you dont want a low range transmission adding uneccessray weight not to mention all the other off road gubbins that weighs tonnes. How about the new Merc ML its the class leader at the moment although i dont know how much they cost. In my opinion the X5 has a bad image, bit footballers wives, so i like the toureg as mine would be towing the birds horse box half the time so outright road performance isnt the biggest consideration. What about a new Land cruiser or shogun?? They are a bit more agricultural than the ones we've mentioned but they were built properly as proper 4x4's unlike the 'SUV's'

Cannot fault my X5 although even the 3.0D doesn't get much over 20 mpg around town if you have a lot of stop start driving. Expect to spend 10k on options if buying new. If you are let me know and I'll list the options that are "must haves".

Porsche Cayenne or maybe a BMW X5, both must be black with big 22" alloys.

All I saw was new 4x4 please, Should read all of the post before I reply in future.

Still If I was in the market for a 4x4 with £40k to burn, I would choose the Porsche, but if I had to have a oil burner it would be the BMW X5 3.0D.

I'd go for the VW but buy a nearly new 5.0 V10 TDi.

Cheers

Am looking for an oil burner and under £40k.

The bubble has burst on these things.
£4.5k discount on the Volvo, £2.5k+ on the X5 and £3-5k off the Toerag. No discounts on the RR. (drivethedeal prices)
Have driven the Volvo (diesel) X5 (4.4) and passengered in the RR supercharged thingy. Not tried a twatreg.
Volvo is awful. Really, really, slow (diesel) ****e build quality lots trim falling off (mate has 2 ) both falling apart, lots of trips to the dealers.
X5 if you can deal with the image. V8 though.
RR was fantastic, great suspension, handling, NAV etc. but at £60k I'd have an M5. Lots of fake plastic metal too which is inexcusable at that price. Not tried the VW, but it's the best looking of that genre to me.
535d touring?

Toerag (how do you spell that ) with 5.0 ltr TDI is a beast. Lush interior as well. Plus on this model you get the air suspension as standard. It doesnt have any of the X5's image problems but tbh someone elses perception of image wouldnt stop me buying a car.

The Volvo is supposed to be very sluggish. I'd go for the V10 toe-rag
