Nowt wrong with a Saab ......especially an Abbot racing one. For £500 i think maybe he is being a little optimistic with his claims but hey if it helps him sell it you cant blame him.

My father-in-law has one of the 250bhp new ones and it packs a fair wallop (for an old mans car)

Gary

If it has the full service history it says it might be a good buy for someone.

"will easily keep up with a Subaru Impretza and out handle one, especially in the wet, where it is very sure footed."

First part - probaby true. Second part - probably false.

220 000 miles though!

First of all. Thanks guys I've been looking for a carlsson.

Can I just say, having owned 8 saabs over 12 years including two with lots of Abbott Goodies. A well prepared 9000 Turbo (modified) IS a match for a UK impreza Turbo.

I know this first hand having owned a Saab 9000 2.3 (Abbott prepared) Turbo producing about 260 bhp and 320 lb/ft (dyno print out to prove). I had this at the same time as my Uk scoob (only mods: exhaust and replacement panel filter).

The extra traction that the scoob offers off the line is an obvious advantage for 0 - 60 sillyness but once you are up and running I can assure you all the saab just waves goodbye.

His comment about 'in the wet'..mmm....well.

Agreed, tried to overtake one once - MY98 UK standard 2000 Turbo - he floored it and pissed off.

My father in laws is a nice car, infact the mother in law has the cabriolet version too. Having driven it it feels extremly smooth. It doesnt have the same turbo delivery as a scoob, comes in much lower down and is much more progressive. Feels much more grown up than a scoob. I have say the wood interior isnt too my taste.

Its certainly not a car I would slate though.

Yes - the bit about the wet is really nonsense. On a damp tight road requiring 2nd gear the Saab always struggles to get the power down - I suggest a 4wd impreza would totally destroy it there.
On fast sweeping roads 3rd/4th gear, a modified Saab is a good match - especially in the dry.
The early Carlssons had more frantic/shorter gearing than the later Aeros so 3rd/4th gear is good for a laugh.

Ha, I spotted this the other night but decided not to set the dogs on him !

It might be very quick once rolling but handling, though they arent that bad, they arent a match for any 4wd Scoob. Thats the kind of thing you pick up for 150 quid from the local dealership before it goes to the scrappers or auction.

I cant see this as that bad a car myself. If it wasnt for the fact that he said its good on the wet and against a scoob then why would SN doubt thats its a reasonable car for the money.

Its been fully serviced all its life, its got tonnes of receipts, had an engine change a couple of years ago, every MOT etc etc....thats the sort of car I would be buying if I was looking for an old nail to drive round in. The fact its a performance nail has made the buyer be a little more flambouyant with his wording, but hey he's after a sale.

Disagree mate. The 9000 carlsson has a bit of a special place amongst 9000 enthusiasts. I for one would hate to to see a carlsson being scrapped. Apparently there are a few others out there, ie 6 people that are currently bidding for a 16 year old 220,000 mile money pit!!

Yeah, for Saab perverts it may be a find akin to the Grail itself, the rest of us however see an aged smelly looking old banger, even as a Saab afficianado myself I would find it hard to love !

Must say that I still like the look of the facelifted version, much better looking.

My only dealing with a Carlsson was that, once I went round to my in laws and there was a white one there, went inside the house and it belonged to the actor Geoffrey Hughes, aka Eddie Yates ex of Corrie and Onslow off Keeping up appearances, plus numerous others, seemed like a nice guy, car looked a bit **** in late 80's brilliant white with colour coded everything.

Quote...His comment about 'in the wet'..mmm....well.

Thats the bit I smirked at, however, his driving skills might have been better than the other guys were when he made that claim.

Traction and torque steer are the major nightmares I have with my 9000 Carlsson, however one off the mark and in the dry it gives supercar performance with fairly decent handling, good enough to get past every car at last years bruntingthorpe trackday which included a lot of exotic sportscars and a complete surprise to me, the Lotus Elige and R1 engined Caterham where getting in my way on the twisty sections.
Never underestimate the power of an old Saab, very addictive.
Mind you always go for the 2.3 against the 2.0 massive difference in useable performance.

The 2.3 carlsson is a rocket. A few mods and you're up to 270 bhp & over 350 lb/ft. In the wet? - well lets just say, the old mans 9000 aero can spin its wheels at 60.

J4CKO

Have you driven a 9k carlsson? Have you driven one fresh from Abbott?

I think its great that you think it is a smelly aged looking old banger.
this keeps the price down for us other folk that are in the know!!

Mark in Ireland....I prefer the frantic gearing of the early 9000s especially the carlsson than my old long legged 9000 Aero. Everything just seems more entertaining.

I've just got rid of Evo IV and even after driving that I still have a lot of respect for a well sorted 9000.

Mine has just a couple of bolt ons and currently is running close to 400hp and 447lb.ft, its dynoed 340hp at 4500rpm and 447lb.ft torque at 3500rpm but kept on spinning the wheels on the rollers above that....so spinning the wheels in most gears is available....

This is without any input or expensive goodies from Abbott, who I've found on the 3 times I've dealt with them to be very poor.

The prevous owner to me paid over £1000 for a gas flowed and ported cylinder head by Abbott and I got invoices for £3500 from Abbott with the car. I was somewhat amused to find the cylinder head was standard...the previous owner wasn't very happy too!! But then again who would ever check if the head had been ported etc unless you fit it yourself. They have stopped replying to my emails and never call back now after I asked how such a thing could have occurred.

Brett, no have not driven one but have done the old car thing for years so it isnt a novelty, plus nowadays spending money at Abotts on one could be considered folly, well at least on one thats done 220,000 miles as however robust they are its had its useful life and it will indeed be a money pit just on stuff to keep it running never mind improve it, I mean just check out that rear arch, been there done that. Would have a look at the later shape aero though.

That one has to be a laugh as it doesnt have any go fast aspirations either and will be about as quick as the Carlsson. Good Q car with some decent(ish) stuff done but horrid colour and looks pretty poor (imho). Still a potential money pit but for that price you can throw away if it breaks.

Couldn't agree more, lad at work has a carlsson, took it for a spin, thinking I might want a luxo barge to keep long distance miles off the scoob and nearly shat myself at the first roundabout we came to, and this was all 'in the wet' nice car, but no Impreza (have I spelled that right?)
