Had something like an epiphany last night
Well, actually the missus prompted it.
Basically I've been banging on about what car to get next, as you do, and she pointed out a very valid point that we only have parking for a single car.
Now, as you may know if you've seen my previous threads on the CSL, I already knew that hence wanting a 'sports' car that also had a practical side.
But what I hadn't thought about was the fact that every weekend I throw a bike rack on the back of the passat and head into the hills, not to mention a few trips a year down to the alps with snowboards and also mountain bikes etc.
Can you imagine doing that with a csl??
Then bearing in mind I live in central london, do I really want to compromise my hobbies just so I can sit in traffic and be looked down upon by BMW-haters? Oh, and maybe do the occasional trackday, and worry about smashing it up?
The answer to all of those, surprisingly, was no.
So, I've come to a conclusion.
Instead of a practical sports car, how about a sporty practical car?
Hence, I am now on the lookout for a RS6 Avant
Anyone have any thoughts on these beasts? I imagine I could drive to the Alps with a boot full of gear a good couple hours quicker than in the passat
Also what about the RS4???

B4 i even got to the bottom of your post i was thinking ' Audi Quattro '. I would rather have the Rs6 for that glorious V8. Although Rs4 is still lush but would it not be older?? RS6 all the way mate. Fast as **** too. Would kill a CSL. What ever you choose you are a lucky bam.

Excellent allround performance , a few people do track them with no problems other than incresed running costs,
Not sure if you would get down to the alps quicker as you would definatly be stopping more to fill up
Would not kill a CSL

FWIW it's worth I think they're a lovely looking car. I've never driven one but the reports I've read speak of a very capable car which, while not pushing all the buttons dynamically (lack of steering feel etc), makes for a great tourer with plenty of grunt.
Issue 052 of evo (which is in the loft) has a full report, so may worth getting that.

January 03 if I've done the maths right, which I think may have sold out. They'll still do a colour photocopy though if you're that keen.

Found the Evo review last night, I think its a RS6 Avant all the way.
Anyone know if there are any simple handling mods (geometry etc.) that can help with the 'handling'

Ed,
Get yourself over to rs246.com
Lots of RS6 owners (dedicated forum) - most seem to be going the bilstein route by the looks of it
Even Big Mo was saying though - you can uprate the handling, but at the end of the day, it's still a 2.5 tonne car
Hope this helps
Dan

I was looking for a S6 Avant a while ago but my pockets weren't deep enough. So I picked up an ST200 Estate. Surprising quick for a big car and handles well to...but as it's a Ford the image isn't quite what it could be. The result of which is low mileage used cars are absolute bargains.
Same Recarro interior too...

The car is a beast. Even after nearly 4 months of ownership, it still scares me. Overtaking on A roads are so effortless - can be construde as a license loser but doesn't attract the attention one gets from either Impreza or Bimmer ownership (sheep/wolf factor). Yes, steering is woolly and car weighs in at 1.85t, but bhp/ton is def up there with the exoticas with a massive carrying load to boot. Slight steering improvements can be made, but it's still heavy - a real case of slow in/fast out. Can be modded to 600 over the standard 450. Not as frugal as the CSL averaging 18 if i'm lucky. A real intercontinental uberwagon sums it up. A Traffic light granprix winner even if it is a slush-o-matic.
It's all I've ever wanted in a car. Go on get one - esp the "plus" model.

Edcase - with the rear seat split 60/40, I can still get my mountain bike in (provided I take off the handlebars and seat plus stem) and have 2 kids in the back too.

make sure it's an extended test drive and not a poxy 20 minute jobby with the sales guy. Tell him that there is a lot of money involved in the deal for the 6 and you don't want to make any rash decisions. I wasn't 100% when I had my 20 mins, so I called my dealer (who happened to be in the same group of dealers), and he gave me some trade plates and I had her for the afternoon. Went on all sorts of typical roads in the 70 miles I did. Signed on the dotted line when I returned her for prep delivery.

Its a 2002 avant, 30k miles for 36k, sat nav plus, bose sound etc.
Daytona grey is nice, but not keen on the silver leather
Won't be buying until probably end of the month or beginning of March so I have plenty of time to find the right one.
