Volvo C70
Anyone got any thoughts on the T5 version of the C70 coupe?
Yes, I know it's a Volvo but I went out in one last week and it was quick, quiet and comfortable. In my opnion, they're one of the nicest looking coupes around and the (standard I believe) stereo system was awesome.
How tunable are the T5 engines? I think they are 240bhp as standard.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

From memory ther are two std outputs
There is a std C70 (cannot remember the bhp) and also a GT version which is 250BHP.
They make a great noise, tend to be reliable and make great GT cars, it is not a great car for back lanes like the scoob.
Mate/chhap at work had one when i had my MY99 UK turbo. I had decat centre + performance backbox and a induction kit otherwise stock.
The C70 was no match off the line but once on the move was quick - quicker!
Great build quality, has a fab ICE system in std form!
I like them, only downside is they can eat front rubber but no suprise when you consider 250BHP fwd and not a light car.
Cannot remember what the fuel consumption was like.
Good all round cars imho.

I love T5's. However the point of a T5 is to have an Estate. The concept of having a 5 adults and a dog in the car at 150mph is the principle of the T5.
There are better coupe's to be had, but the C70 isn't too bad. It is reasonably tunable. IIRC the auto’s run a 15g Mitsubishi turbo with a 240hp output. The manuals run a 16t Mitsubishi turbo with 250hp. Each car weighs around 1500 kgs and as a standard car will do 7 sec 0-60,< 16 sec 1/4 mile and 18 sec 0-100.
From a tuning perspective, a basic generic remap will achieve around 300hp @ crank for about £600. This will lower the 0-60 to 6-6.5, 14.5 1/4 mile and 16 sec 0-100. It is the 100-150 which is pretty relentless in a tuned C70. The next stage would be a 19T Mitsubishi turbo [most popular] with dp, sports cat and full stainless exhaust with a custom remap should achieve 300 WHP. This will knock 0-60 down to 5.5 secs, 13.8-14 sec 1/4 mile and 15 sec 0-100. Again it is the mid range and top end that is staggering. With the above mods it will probably cost £2500, + brakes and suspension, so budget £5000. But with that power it should do 1/4 of a million miles, the engines are that good ! The top end performance will also be pretty stunning. The auto will in theory do around 170 mph, I think the manual will do about 165 on the limiter ? The manual is the strong box, and I would recommend that for major mods. They are a bit of a sleeper and can be lots of fun. The down side is the handling is only average at best, and there is no LSD on any models. For the LSD you need to look at a S70/ V70R
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the comments so far. Having looked around on the old Autotrader, there seems to quite a few around and at a more-reasonable-than-I-expected price.
I currently have an RB5 but my wife is pushing me to sell after she was subject to an 'incident' in it last week. It's clear that she doesn't want the attention with our 17mth old in the car and whilst she doesn't use it very often (she has an S3 herself) she has now flatly refused to drive it again.
I'm therefore "considering my options".
Further comments still appreciated!

They are very good value (ok I know its a Volvo, but hey), but high depreciation is likely to continue, so although you may pay a fair whack more for a BMW/Audi/Merc coupe - it'll be worth a lot more when you come to sell, as well as being a better car.

Sorry to go off topic, but was that 'incident' local? Have been starting to worry about things like this recently.
Also, what exhaust do you have on yours?
Cheers

Hi "neighbour" Gary.
Would you believe, in Redhill itself (yes, you would believe!). She was subject to a bit of abuse from some chavs in an old BMW 3 series who threatened to carjack her if she didn't "get out of the car without fuss" at some red lights. She put her foot down when the lights went but they followed her - she obviously does listen to some things I say though, cos she drove straight to Reigate police station and they soon drove off. She only got a partial look at their number plates (which were in thin italics). K38 something and in black.
I've never personally been threatened in the car, and I don't want to give up a car I enjoy, but I may not have any choice!
Exhaust is a Scoobysport by the way.

I forgot to mention the running costs. The fuel consumption for a standard / modded auto is 18-24 mpg, a manual is 23-28 mpg on average. I serviced mine every 5000 miles including 12 month transmision fluid changes and brake fluid changes. The cambelt is 70k/80k. I managed to find a great specialist so it was reasonable value for money. The car was beyond mint though, and mechanically very sound indeed. I may have been excessive, but that car with that treatment will do monster miles !

Loads of midrange grunt, loads of wheelspin.RICA chip claims to up the power to 304bhp.240bhp as standard.Handle like a barge as standard. standard 9 speaker stereo is awesome. 19mpg around town 29 on a run. Running costs not to bad as there are Volvo specialists around.Watch for rear crankshaft oil seal leak and top engine mount crack.b
