The digital tuning boxes can work very well, but make sure you get one from a reasonably reputable company (Dragon Performance, van Aaken, East Coast, Tunit / Bromleys).
The cheap ones you see for about £30 (or £20 if you buy from Germany) are crude "resistors in a box" which fool the fuel temperature sensor and cause the ECU to overfuel. Some people reckon they are worth it for the price, others reckon that they don't boost performance much and just give loads of unwelcome smoke.
Have a look on forums like www.seatcupra.net/forums as there are a lot of VAG PD diesel owners that have either had a remap or a tuning box added.
You can get remaps done for around £300 by Jabbasport etc but of course it stays with the car, whereas you can sell on a tuning box.
