Is it the new shape ML? The previous one held the worst reliabilty (owner surveys) of ALL cars (not just for mercs!) for 2 or 3 years running. Build was poor (look at the shutlines between the bumpers and the body, you could loose small dogs in those gaps!) outside as well as in (all built in the US I think although apparently better on later models I believe).
5.5V8 (supercharged?) and weighing 2.5 tonnes so no, it aint gonna be cheap to fuel. 20mpg is optomistic, 15 if you behave with the right foot (in which case, why go for the AMG one!) although I reckon on 12mpg.
Actually, come to think of this, I'm hard pressed to think of any car that would be more expensive to run this side of Ferraris/Lambos!!!
Go for it I say as long as you've got a fat wallet

Ultra Reliable ?
He said Mercedes ML.
As motors go I reckon that could be the daftest purchase ever, we had a ML 320 and that did sub 20 mpg and really wasnt very good, poor (for a Merc) build quality, ugly, slow and wallowy.
If you really must get an X5 4.4 or 4.6

The mechanic from the Merc garage say "don't be so bllody stupid". They don't corner, poor reliability, can't go off road, and only really go quite well in a straight line. I'd go for a G55 if it was my choice.

Mine's an ML500 02 facelift(up for sale soon )
MPG avg is about 16, usually around 13-22 depending on the run
servicing costs arent that bad
main running costs are fuel and brakes (they eat them)
I'm not too sure on the insurance side as I have a traders policy
and I havent had a problem with it!
