It appeals except for its weight and the front bias of the diff.
Stealthy looks, refinement and all that goes with being based on a repmobile - ie a very decent car. If it handled like an Evo and was a bit lighter I'd have one in a shot.

You sure your son-in-law doesn't have a TDi Cupra, as I have come up against one of these Mazda's and the result was totally different.
The Mazda appeared to go well as the speeds progressed, but it doesn't appear to have much pull out of corners. Not bad for a rep-mobile, will surprise alot of people.

Well, I may be in a better position than most to answer this one! I had the keys to one for a day before i bought my MY06 Sti a couple of months back. The nice chap at Mazda said drive it as fast as you want!
First thing, the interior is in a completely different league to the Scoobs - much better built and similar to a BMW 3 series - kiwigti. A tad on the bland side though.
Performance wise, it was deceptively fast - no drama or big turbo shove but some big numbers on the clock pretty quickly. However, it was nowhere near the Sti - even the bread knife (who's not into cars) couldn't believe the difference and suggested i go for the Sti!
The MPS also fealt a bit remote and you didn't feel 'as one' like with the Sti. Horrible soul-less engine noise too (even compared to the MY06).
I also personally found the looks a little too repmobile.
The big shock for me was looking at the projected future value after 3yrs - something like 30% IIRC!
All IMHO AFAICR etc.

I suggest Blue Dragoon gets his son-in-laws LCR looked at...
Probably a dodgy MAF.
