Life on T2 turbo on R5
Son has just bought a recon'd T2 for his R5 GTT off a friend as his original T2 was b8ggered due to oil seals leaking, it was recon'd 8,000miles ago and has about 7-8mm of play on it...
How long will it last running around 12-14psi? Just I've heard T2's work all the time hence low life expectancy.

Keep the oil nice and fresh (change every 3k miles), and it could go on for ever, or it could last a few minutes. I've known standard T2's go on for well over 100k. However, that sounds like quite a lot of play in the shaft!

Is the t2 the std turbo? I bought mine from south london with 215,000 miles on it....No receipts for a turbo....very well looked after and once I`d sorted the cooling out it ran like a dream

Cheers guys. I only wish I had more money and sense at the time lol. Got a nice little exhaust, DV, and bleed valve. Had it tweaked to about 150bhp which was great but the temptation was too much. A little tweak made a big difference...then another a few months later. Was a rapid little thing but the inevitable happened. When I got the head replaced it was fettled with a little by a m8..head skimmed and other bits. Boosted much quicker than b4 but had a chance of a new Cup so sold it...

They reckon at least 70k miles for a T2 but my mate's 5 had well over 100k on the clock when he sold it, with the original turbo, and he'd been running it at 1bar for about 40k miles, no probs.
As long as you use a good quality fully synth oil, change it every 3k miles, and allow them to warm up & cool down properly there's no reason they won't do big miles...
On the other hand, one of my 5's had a habit of eating turbo's, but that turned out to be due to the oil pump.

Well if we're showing pics... here's mine...
Had this one over 4 years now, had another before that for a couple of years. Just had them as second cars for a play thing, although I recently sold my main car and was using the 5 as my daily driver for a few weeks, it performed without a hitch.
