Yes, Turbocharged and circa 260 BHP I think. Fastest of the volvo range in it's day.
Was taken on a passenger ride in one of these round Knockhill by Tim Harvey (when he drove BTCC for Volvo) who amazed me in unintentionally demonstrating just how wide the difference is between those who "think" they can drive and those who are really gifted.

You stats are all wrong - clearly not in the caravan club
The volvo T5 [and R's] had a 2.3 5 pot and the 850R produces 250hp. However, for £500 you can take it to around 310hp and for another £2000 you can take it to 350 and around 380 lb/ft. Add a few more gg's and it will pass 400hp.
My mate has a 340hp 850R. It is brisk They are so rock solid that they can do monster miles with lots of power and it doesn't worry them at all !

There is a AWD version of the R. I don't think Volvo have managed to create a bullet proof AWD system yet. The one on the phase 1 R's is a bit temperamental, and you have to keep switching your tyres to ensure they wear at the same rate.
The newer phase 2 stuff is better {haldex I think} but is still not as good as you would like.

If you mean a Clio Williams, from a standstill there wouldnt be much in it if it were a standard T5, the R was a smidge quicker at 250 bhp (Auto 240) but a lot harder suspension and looked well mean.
However once rolling the Volvo would be quite a bit quicker standard vs standard but if the Volvo was modified it would just dissapear, the Volvos come into their own on fast roads without too many bends, Mine was quicker than the Terzo that my uncle had at the time once moving.
Get a white one with a mega mileage for under a grand, chip it and go very quickly indeed. As with any fast Swedish car, they dont handle, no LSD (on the T5, not sure about the R) so it wasnt uncommon to wonder why you werent moving only to realise that because you were turning slightly the lack of acceleration was due to the inside front tyre vapourising, very solid drivetrain so you didnt tend to feel it tramping away like my Saab does !
Ran ours for 40,000 miles and apart from and engine damper rubber (fixed myself for 15 quid) we had no problems at all, very very well built car.
Cant say I have heard of an engine failure in these or any big problems. We got a bit of clutch judder bu was told by the dealers that they all do it to a greater or lesser extent due to the massive flywheel used to try and tame the power delivery, can get a little out of balance.

The only models that come with an LSD are the R's. The T5-R did not and indeed they need it ! But as you say the performance once fettled means under 2k you can play with much bigger players in a straight line.
