Yep, pretty sure these were available with the 1.9PD engine.
Why not try the used car locator on www.skoda.co.uk
In fact, here you go!

Had a 4x4 Turbo Estate.
Went anywhere, never let me down. On Building Sites, Fishing trips, Commuting and at 80mph got 34mpg.
Don't know about the Deisil but petrol one lasted 3 very happy years.
Don't forget, got the AUDi TT enngine & the Quattro 4 wheel drive system for little money.
Moved over to a Scooby Forester Turbo and the the Octavia isn't that far behind.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards
Alan MAC

Thanks Alan.
My father is obsessed with getting a diesel these days - even though it will cost him a lot more in the first place. He only does around 20k miles a year.
He's had 4 legacy estates in the past which were hungry on fuel and he's enjoyed the economy a diesel golf has given him.
Looks like he might end up with a normal non-4x4 diesel Octavia estate as the 4x4 ones only came out last year and he's not looking to spend £10k+.

If he's going for a normal estate then tell him to look for a top spec L&K version.
Even the Elegance version came with nasty plastic steering wheel and gear lever. Avoid the low spec classic and ambient, the trim and spec are poor and they mainly came with a 90bhp diesel.
The 1.9TDi 110bhp versions are good, very economical and work well with a decent tuning box. They are old tech direct injection so can be a bit tractor like and give a backround thrum on the motorway.
A lot better bet are the 130bhp versions, these have the newer PD engine and 6 speed box, they have far more refinement and a lot more bottom end grunt.
Cheers
Lee

Personally I'd buy a 4x4 with the 1.8T engine and have it remapped if I was going for the older cars. If he doesn't need 4x4 then the L+K with the diesel engine is a good bet but you'll pay so much more for the engine and trim level it starts to become uneconomic.
