Can an Evo make 400bhp???
I know this is a scooby forum, but I hope I will be able to find my answer here.....
I am thinking about buying an Evo 8 or 9, probably an FQ300 as my next car and I will obviously mod it, so I have been checking out the options. Can they make near 400bhp with only bolt on mods, e.g. exhaust and induction kit etc etc. It just seems a lot of horse power for such a little cost.
Does anyone have any expierence of this?
Also, apart from WRC-Tech, who supplies quality parts for Evo's.
Cheers,
Dave

2 guys at work have Evo 8's - MR300 + MR320, and both took them to WRC Tech
The MR320 finished with 389bhp, and the MR300 had 378bhp (i think)
Sure that was with re-map, exhaust, and induction mods
MA Developments are also very good. Go for the Autronics ECU, and get anti-lag on it at the same time!!!

buy an MR340 bolt on exhaust iduction kit and remap and i think i'm right in saying that would take you to about 390/400. or just save up for longer and buy an FQ400

I have been reading the MLR but still haven't found my answer, will join up soon
Thanks Tony, I am hoping John Banks will read this.
From reading a few websites, some companies are using bolt on mods and others are replacing engine internals all for the 400bhp goal. I would want a realiable engine, so is 400bhp pushing it on the standard internals?
Also, do you hear of many evo engines going bang? Haven't managed to find one thread about Evo 8 or 9 engines going pop.

Or just buy the new Evo IX 360!!! 366bhp-363ftlbs. De-cat, filter exhaust should put you around the 400 mark...Deffo with a re-map.

Is there any difference between the Evo 7 and Evo 8/9 engine?
TBH, I have read some conflicting posts about WRC-Tech and I'm not sure if I would want to go there, all IMO of course.
I have seen the new FQ360 and it does look nice but I don't fancy the depreciation on a new car.

Replied on 22b.
8MR and 9 are the choice models, with especially strong engines, big turbos, good cams, Bilstein suspension.
The value choice is a new JDM 9 GSR for £23k on immediate delivery in the UK. Add cat 1 alarm, locking wheel nuts. Walbro pump, 3" exhaust, remap and you're at 400 BHP. Could be all done with change from £24k.
The FQ models are just simple bolt ons, they all map to the same approx 400 BHP with the above mods. 8MR is about 20 BHP lower 7/8/260 about 20 BHP below that.
At present I run 25 PSI peak at about 2600 RPM, then hold 23.5 PSI through the midrange, rolling off to 22 PSI at 6000, 20 PSI at 7500. Rev limiter is at 7606 RPM, in the US they seem to raise this to 8000 RPM, but it is quite a long stroke engine and I have no need, the power band is at least as good as a 2.5 Scooby. With some methanol, 28 PSI made it quite a wild ride.
Highly recommended. Even does 300 miles on a 55 litre tank if you are nice to it, despite the reputation.
Downsides - 4500 service interval, skips a bit on rough roads like the more recent STIs, think this is the tyres, although nothing like as bad as German stuff. On smoother stuff, simply incredible.

Thanks for taking the time out to reply John
I currently own a P1 which is running around 350bhp. Do you think I will notice much of a difference in terms of performance?
Apart from the bolt on's. Is there any difference between the GSR and FQ series?

The P1 is 10% lighter and has quite a kick when it spools up in comparison so can feel quicker than it is. It also covers bumpy roads very well, whereas the Evo would skip about a bit, but the tables are turned when it is smoother. Turn in and steering feel are better on the Evo and it doesn't know understeer anything like a P1. The stock brakes on the Evo are better than the P1.
FQ is simply bolt ons on the same generation of GSR.
In an acceleration comparison I would think of the turbo used on the Subaru rather than the power level. A really well set up 16G Impreza run on Optimax with FMIC, headers, induction, exhaust, 550s/pump, 12.1 quarter mile shows acceleration times on data logs quite close to a IX with pump, remap and exhaust - also on Optimax. They both move on if running higher boost fuelled up on methanol. There is a significant spool up advantage to the Evo - it is very linear through the gear in terms of acceleration.

John, who would you recomend for tuning the Evo to around 400bhp. I like the packages WRC-Tech do but I was wondering what other compaines you can trust your money with.
What make mods have you got on yours? Any pics btw?
Cheers,
Dave

Id like to think my Evo 7 GSR with the following mods is around 370bhp!
Full 3" decat exhaust system
Uprated fuel pump
HKS filter
HKS blow off valve
Apexi Power FC and commander
Apexi AVC-R
Been told its about the safe limit on the Evo 7 engine without spending loads of money changing the internals! But give it a few months when im bored of the power and maybe a set of cams and some other bolt on mods could give me the magic 400bhp mark.
The best thing about the evo from someone who is going to modify a car for more power is that most of the standard parts e.g intercooler, injectors, turbo, gearbox, engine, etc can take 370+bhp, so these things dont need to be changed, so it works out a lot cheaper for someone like me who hasnt got loads of money to throw at my car!

Dave, I had a map on my car from WRC-Tech that was arranged by the previous owner. It did 397 BHP on their rollers and 380 BHP on my local rollers. It ran a bit lean for my liking during spool up and way too rich at the top for power. In hot weather it exhibited lift off detonation at the boost level it was mapped for, and although this probably does no damage I don't like it. I sorted out the fuelling, got rid of the detonation and also helped the spool up with MIVEC changes. Now it runs a fair bit quicker, smoother and I believe safer.
www.dentistmapped.com seems to do pretty good maps. I think Andy Forrest should start mapping Evos, but I can't talk him into it, he has more than enough Subaru work. I have no wish to do this sort of work commercially for the forseeable future.

I get the feeling the Dentist is closer to where you live John than myself.
I will try searching for someone down south. I have used Bob Rawle in the past for my scooby so I might contact him to see if he can do it.

Simon Norris, NorrisDesigns.com, hes the main evo man,he took my VIII FQ300 to around 420hp/400lbs, reliable, great to deal with and a nice bloke to!!,he still had his 800hp VIIRS then and he took me out in that, now that was frightening!!,hes not the cheapest but in mine and a lot of other Evo owners opinion hes the best, you never know you might get a blast in his mental Green IX!!!!!.
