Default my bloody car has done a big wee

i went out this afternoon and notice a great puddle on the floor. When i got in the car and started it i realised th steering was heavy. So had a look and realised it was the power steering fluid on the floor.
Has anyone got any idea of what it could be and woundering if it was a burst pipe or something. Oh ideas of price of repairs too.
Cheers steve

Rover 600 sdli 98R. forgot to mention

Puddle of what...get it on your fingers, colour and smell please.

Hose, cheap

Split cooler pipe (if fitted), cheapish

Rack blown seals, not so cheap

PAS pump, not as cheap as the above

Power steering heavy, level below the minimum, and you lot are saying it could be a coolant hose or the aircon.

Pretty obvious it's going to be red in colour and ATF fluid.
However to " guess " at where it came from and how to fix it and what cost I'd have to be a bloody mind reader.

Check the steering rack, the pipes coming from it, the power steering pump, the reservoir and the pipes too and from that.

You should find a leak somewhere, then someone might be able to help further.

The way I diagnosed the golf was to fill the PAS reservoir back up, lie under the front of the car & get someone to wiggle the steering wheel with the engine running, it's quite obvious then where the leak is coming from.

Turned out to be corroded unions on the pipes in my case, so not to expensive to fix, just time consuming

Note: when following the above instructions, make sure you are not directly under any part of the PAS system, and wear goggles, hydraulic oil is not the sort of stuff you want to be getting near your eyes

Oh yeah, and to avoid getting a darwin/stella award, make sure the car is in neutral
