Default New Golf Gti - opinions!

What does everyone think about these? admittedley not as quick as a VXR or a Focus ST - but a lot of tuning companies offering 250-265bhp performance for £1000-1500 - and i feel would make a capable fast road car

Anyone driven one of these modded versions?

Cheers

DSG model quicker than VXR to 60.

Dont bother though, Cupra R has lots more power for a little less money

A lot of tuning companies offering similar gains for the other two cars as well.

I had one, and it was the worst VW GOLF i have ever owned.
It was unreliable and build was crap compared to my other MK4 golfs before the MK5.

In the end i sold it........ It was a crap car, not helped by the crap dealers and VW UK couldnt give a stuff about customer care.

Stay well clear, get your name down for the new CIVIC TYPE R

Cool

I used to own a MKV GTI and VXR

The GTI is duller than John Major. I'd take a VXR everyday. Is quicker, even than a DSG (see autocars 0-100 on the VXR), is more fun and better built.

No brainer

I testdrove a GTI a couple of weeks ago and thought it was a great car, in fact
currently looking to buy one, streets ahead of the Mk4 in all areas (as you would expect).

Car of the year as voted by a couple of magazines recently, and always gets
a good review.. Ok, its down on power from the latest breed of hot-hatches,
but it has a better image than any of them.

No brainer?? Thats generally the VXR drivers...

Looks nice ,apparantly goes well but I would rather give all my money to a begger than help a VW garage. They need reminding they are ordinary cars, not Bentleys that they sell

Skoda octavia vrs.Same engine, bits, capability, potential for tuning. And £4k spare to spend on the tuning.

It isn't streets ahead of the MKIV in terms of quality. The plastics, cloth on the seats and general fit and finish are appalling in comparison.

They also have well documented and unresolved problems with their steering racks.

They are a very competent drive (reminded me of a MK1 focus in many ways) and power is reasonable but as soon as you start putting decent options on the car it soon becomes a 25K Golf, well OTT for what you actually get.

I wouldn't at all unless buying a discounted 3 door euro import with basic spec at around 17.5K from motorpoint. At that price, taking into account residuals and shorter warranty, they still offer decent value.

I watched a new golf GTi being driven round the ring from a few spectator points last weekend. I can honestly say it looked one of the quickest cars there on the day. A friend followed it round in his Caterham (and he can drive) and he struggflled to keep up with the dancing golf. He said it looked extremly sure footed.

From that alone it would get my vote

Brakes aren't great though, the pedal was sinking to the floor after 20 mins or so of spirited driving.

A company called Morego do a tuning package for a grand which ups the power to 250bhp - surely this would make it a quick road car.

Boring - maybe but i would like a car that does everything that my Subaru does and more. (wont be as fast admittedley)

maybe as i get older i want something a bit more understated

Beware, my brother in laws mate chipped his, never been right since, VW dont want to know and neither do the tuning company.

Sometimes the actually reality of chipping is not as appealing as the concept, usually its ok but occasionally it goes wrong, plus the GTI is known to have issues so it might just be VW looking for a get out clause.

Ive yet to see the GTI with DSG quicker than a VXR and for sheer mid range, the golf feels like its going backwards. At least Ive owned both and driven 5000 miles in each.

Look at Revo and Custom code too... loads of people over on http://www.uk-mkivs.net with remapped cars, and never heard of any issues..

I think they are a pretty quick road car as standard though, the handling makes up for any tenths of secs lost out on the straights..

Evo tested an up rated one some time back, they did not say anything bad about it.
But they do rate the standard car very highly, sporty handling and comfortable ride.
Although I believe it lacks a bit of character because its so accomplished and to explore its limits the speeds are high and possibly not really for the public road.

As a every day car they are superb

A true all rounder

Quick

Fun

quality

cheap to run

good image (classy not chavy)

excellent residuals

A wise buy

VXR may be slightly quicker in a straight line but thats it I drove one it was awfull I felt like a right muppet and it cant handle the power its got, never mind anymoreit also look like a dogs dinner, mpg was rubbish

Focus ST was quite nice but the image again is very low and they also look like a dogs dinner and 20mpg is average

Both will be worth nothing in three years time

For me the Golf wins as a total package hands down - under stated cool - quick and for £499 a Revo remap gives you 260BHP and 300 lbs feet, it will cruise all day on the motorway like a limo and on a 17m commute to work, town and motorway it will give 45.1 MPG (if driven like a granny !!!)

NO rattles and no faults at all in 4800 miles ......

Best car I have ever had

(and I have had alot of good ones)

LMAO either your friend's Caterham is "blessed" with a 1300xflow or something is seriously wrong with him or it's chassis.

I`ve owned a Mk 5 GTI, mate, and I had it re-mapped, by Awesome GTI in Manchester, using an APR re-map, to 245 bhp, and it absolutely transformed the car, and made it what VW should have done in the first place.

The torque figure went up to over 260 lbs/ft, and it pulled in every gear.

Stopped being the happy, smiling cuddly toy it was when I bought it, and turned it into Hannibal Lecter..........

If you do get one mate, I would highly recommend it, as they handle well, and are of good quality inside and out.

You MUST, however, get it re-mapped !
