Volvo 480
Ok, the time may have come to swap 'dog-to-the-beach-car' for me...
Currently running a 1992 Rover 216GTi, which hasnt been a problem at all, but requires an MOT and I know it'll need brakes all round and a set of tyres.. Maybe 200quids worth at the most?? However, it may need other things and cost more.
I've been offered a 1990 Volvo 480 1.8i for around the same money it'll cost me to put the Rover through its MOT. I've heard the reliability of Volvos is good, but are there things to look for on the 480?? Its got tax until November and test until April 07....
Need a bit of advice, cause I quite like the Rover?! Seriously though, I dont want to get rid of it if this Volvo is gonna end up as a bag of trouble.
Cheers,
Grant

Depends how image concious your dog is, but I suppose if a Rover was acceptable.
Seriously it depends on how agiles the dog is, quite a high back on them from what I remember, my Missus desperately wanted a Tigra back in 1995, went to order one and the minute she saw the boot lip three feet in the air she decided it wouldnt be suitable for the dog, bought a Golf instad.

Thanks for the update guys, still going to look at it tomorrow, might buy it and punt it onwards after I've lavished a bit of TLC on it.....

Electrics -they have digital dashes if I recall
Not all Volvoīs are reliable. This is a bit of an urban myth.
The 940s were the best thing they ever did. I have driven them with over 300k on the clock. The T5 engine was also a high point for them.
old 740s arnīt bad really as well. Everything went a bit down hill after that. Culminating in one of the worst cars I have ever driven the C70. The new one must be an improvement because it couldnīt get any worse.
The 480 really wasnīt there best effort. I would stick with the rover.
I used to drive volvos for a living and have probably driven virtually everything they have ever built - even the old classics.
Stick to the Rover
