hello mate. i've just had this problem for about 2 months!! its really annoying! i fixed mine yesterday after posting on a bmw website asking for help.
What you need to do is take the bulb holder out as if your checking the bulbs and disconnect the wiring plug.
If you look at the wiring plug you will see a brown wire. This is the wire that is linked to the diagnostic (the one that makes the light go on!)
If you look at the corrosponding part on the bulb pannel you will see it will have a load of carbon or some kind of crap on there.. You need to get some electrical contact cleaner (i got some halfords stuff) and i used a really small flat head screw driver carefully to scrape it off. Once done the light will go off and should all be fine( i was advised to use a brilo pad but seemed a bit hard to get in there and my way worked fine!!)

This is a common problem apparently and is caused by some kind of short happening on this wire. Its sometimes to badly damaged and the panel needs replacing. One of mine looked bad but cleaned up fine and the problems completly gone.
If i haven't explained it well pm me and i'll try and sort some photos out or give you my number and talk you through it.
Hope this helps
