Default 15k car, what would you get?

I currently have a Civic Type R. Had it for just over 3 years, been dead reliable (touch wood) and isn't expensive to run but now fancy a change for something different.

Before the Civic I had a Scoob (JDM STI Type R) that was also a fantastic car. I wouldn't mind another Scoob but it would probably have to be another JDM STI. The thing is I now live close to work (about 6 miles) so not sure if a scoob would really be suited to a round trip of 12 miles a day although takes about 20-25 mins to do that distance!

Other cars I was also thinking about are:

- 3 Series BMW (nice drive but think I would get bored to quick?).
- DC5 Teg (Never driven one?).
- Focus ST (same money as Scoob maybe a little more, so bang for buck I guess the scoob would be better anyway).

What other cars are out there which I could also consider? What have others gone for after owning a Scoob?

Thanks

hmmm, Golf's always seem to be over priced for what they are.

Leon Cupra, can't say I have taken much notice of those. Are there any forums for these? I will have a search.

I've got a Scoob and have just started working from home which is a pretty short trip!

I reckon the shorter your commute the dafter the car you can have. What about an elise or a VX220?

The less time you spend commuting the more you can spend enjoying yourself.

I had a Civic Type-R and loved it, then went to an 03 WRX PPP, then a Golf TDi, now a Nissan 350Z. Absolutely love it A friend has a Focus ST and has had nothing but trouble with it, its forever back in the workshop. Personally I wouldn't even consider the 2.5 Boxster, maybe the 3.2 Boxster S though.

Dont get a Focus ST, If you want a decent Focus get the RS, very low mileage mint ones going for £15k, and they really do take to tuning very well, my car with sports cat and exhaust system and manifold, induction kit, Bluefin chip, made 270bhp 310lb/ft on Powerstations rollers!!! with a new Turbo im hoping for 300+bhp. Ive owned my FRS for a year now and ive had no problems with it at all, even though its modified its brilliant on petrol best Ive got recently was 270miles to a tank of petrol, Insurance is very cheap, I did insurance quotes on a Clio 182 and Civic Type R and they where more expensive then the FRS!!!!

Only negative thing I can say about the FRS is that when the roads are wet, the car is a bit of a handful, but what do you expect from a car running a lot of power through the Front wheels, But everything else about the car is great, nice interior, good engine, handling is spot on, and they seem to be dropping in price at the moment which is good for a potential buyer who will keep the car for a few years as I cant see you losing that much money in depreciation!!!!!

6 miles? save the motor for fun and get the bus/bike in. You'll be able to afford a 20k car then!

Does it have to be a late-ish model?
If not, and you obviously like performance cars, I would look at some Lancia Delta Evo's. You can get a minter, and have plenty of change.

I think I've said this for pretty much every 'which car' thread I've posted on... but here goes again!

BMW Z3M. 15k would get you one with 30-40k on the clock, which isn't bad for an M series BMW.

For 15k I wouldn't personally go for anything with a 0-60 time of over 6 seconds... But that's just me.

Depending on how adventurous/mad you are here's some alternative suggestions to your average FWD hatch:

z4m Coupe - BMW : BMW Z3M Coupe

3.2L V6 c32 AMG - Mercedes : C32 AMG saloon.

5.7L Monaro -
Vauxhall : 5.7 V8 Two Door Coupe.

4.5L Cerbera - TVR : Cerbera 4.5L Coupe

DC5! In blue! You won't regret it for a second.

I went through a week where I thought I had to get rid of my P1, and the DC5 was the car I would have got, even test drove one. In my opinion it's not just a good car, but a great car, (for an FWD anyway!), and that opinion is coming from someone who owns arguably the best Impreza version made.

DC5 all the way!

I think what Dazza is trying to say is that a well modded DC5 in white oh! and I happen to be selling mine, seriously, if I were spending £15k I would snap my car up, it's had £10k's worth of very well choosen high quality mods, plus much cheaper running costs than an EVO which you will need deep pockets and money in reserve just in case the diff or clutch go.

Bit too far to bike to work and back each day, especially when it's pissing down with rain. And the buses around here dont go that way.

I would like something no more than 4-5 years old and not much over 45k miles. I don't really see the point in spending say 15k on a 14 year old car (Escort Cosworth).

Yes i’m with you on that, I would like something sub 6 seconds 0-60 time if possible

I would buy a brand new euro import WRX for £14k, fit a Walbro fuel pump £70, remap the ECU (free DIY), fit a used stainless exhaust £300, STI intercooler £200 and used 20G turbo £500, uprated brake pads £100, geometry £50, rear ARB £80. Should do about 380 BHP, but I wouldn't go mad on the torque and boost for the sake of the gearbox, just a bit beyond PPP, about 350 lbft say.

Ive had all sorts, S2000 / Evo 8 / STi / WRX / UK spec scoob / DC2 / DC5 etc etc, all as daily drivers.

Ask away

But Cyber's car must be bloody awesome.

Im currently on a blue DC5 and really enjoying it.

If I had the choice I would still have my Evo 8 back but the DC5 is truly excellent.

Re the 3 series and Focus - have a word with yourself man! Dull dull dull

Quick Reply: 15k car, what would you get?
