My wife is hankering after an viii and I don't really know anything about them, our budgets around 15k which seems will get us an viii quite comfortably. however I see FQ, MR and GSR quoted quite a bit and don't understand what they mean as they effect the value a fair bit, FQ I guess is a UK power option as does the MR although I can't see the difference ? Is GSR a JDM car ? also do JDM have the advantages/disadvantages over the uk variant in the same way Scoobies do.
Are there any trim options ?
Any help would be appreciated as would any links to sites for evo owners.
Thanks, Lee.

anything with FQ in the title is a UK car. If not it is a jap GSR with 280 and that's it.
the 260 is also a UK only car and is more of a 7/8 hybrid.
The 8 had a revamp halfway through its life and became the 8MR. You can get a jap or a UK MR, but the UK again will be an MR FQ3XX.
The MR had an ally roof weighing 10kg less, bilstein shocks which are more comfy, nicer seats and different cams making it a nicer drive.
If you can stretch get the MR if only for the suspension alone.
I didn't but I don't regret it since I saved a shed load of cash (about 3k) and was always intending to change up the "better bits" for "even better bits"!

I've seen really late 260's on 55/06 plates, does that make them MRs or are the MR's all FQ's complimenting the 'standard' 260's ?
thanks
PS sorry if I sound thick

260 is pretty much like a 5 speed Evo VIII with an extra cat, detuned ECU and IIRC softer cams.
260s can be a bargain, but to get 380 BHP out of them you need to change the cams and the turbine housing, along with the usual fuel pump, remap, induction, exhaust to get 380 BHP. Without the cams and turbine housing they do about 350 BHP. Clutches and brake discs on used Evos often have to be budgeted for.
£15k should get you an VIII MR FQ320, which a friend has. He fitted a decat pipe (£50) and Walbro pump (£70) and I remapped and it did 380+ BHP at very sensible boost levels.

John I was under the impression the 260 was a 7 with an 8 front end.
Used to have an 8 FQ330, awesome car but very expensive to run remember servicing every 4500 miles.
The FQ330 and MRFQ340 had alcanterra/Leather seats and they are much nicer IMO. Many people think the 300 is a better prospect if you want to mod though as the 330/340 used a crude piggyback chip IIRC.

MattW, the 260 is more 8 than 7 I reckon - pistons are same as 8MR, S-AYC is off the 8 not the 7 as it has the higher torque transfer capability of the 8. I think the 260 is vastly under-rated, the weight is also an EC weight, so there isn't the 60kg between it and a normal 8 that appears to be the case when the cars are on a weighbridge.

Also if you've got a fat **** you stand a better chance of fitting in a 260- the seats are wider.
I also think they are an underrated car when you consider that a map and exhaust will see you at 300bhp and I actually preferred the 5 speed bx for everyday driving. I also prefer the way they look with the smaller more discreet spoiler.
That said if I was going to buy an VIII I'd go the whole hog and get an MR.

Ive got an VIII MR 380bhp running 1.6 bar boost. It pulls well and handling is very sharp. I wouldnt go for a 260 gsr as you will wish you got the MR. Abit like newage WRX and STI versions i suppose. People that got WRX wished they went for the STI in the first place from what ive read...
