Sporthatch is 170bhp (not 200bhp so it doesn't compete with the VXR), five door can be 170 or 200 as is the estate.
I found it embarrassingly hard to shake a 200bhp one off my **** when driving my mk4 Golf R32 so they are quite pokey.

Sorry but that's total bollox!
Mk4 Golf R32 - 0-60 in 6.4, 0-100 in around 16.3
Astra VXR - 0-60 in 6.7, 0-100 in 16.7.
From Evo mag - and the VXR gets a pretty poor lap time too. The mk4 R32 doesn't.
If I REALLY have to, I'll link to this information but I can't be arsed.
I was shocked at how much slower the VXR was in fact.

Well I've seen over 17s for 0-100 for the VXR.
See, what I do is find information and use that, rather than making stuff up.
If you are telling me a VXR can accelerate as quickly as a 130i with RWD and over 260bhp then I really do think you're talking BS.
I like the mk5 Astra (and have one) but I'm afraid the VXR does nothing for me.

Look look VXR, it's all very well getting all defensive but I have looked at times from many sources - A few US mags got 0-100 in 14.7s for the mk4 R32 but I won't use that as no UK mags did.
Surely YOU looked up that info from one mag and called it gospel so rather hypocritical.
You are also being "selective" in your figures, ignoring the worse ones (of over 17s to 100 for example).
Evo does not favour the R32 over the VXR, in fact they really like both - sorry to shatter your illusion there.

No illusion fella just that all of the reviews i have read put the VXR faster than that. Had one or two runs ins with R32'S as well, they were not that fast. ie did not keep up with me.

Sorry to throw your little argument off-cue but I was going to have a look myself and mistyped "VRX" into google...
Try it and look at the sponsored links Possibly quite appropriate?

Well then the drivers were crap.
Look - they have SIMILAR performance and Top Gear AND Evo mag do a fair bit better with lap times in the mk4 R32 than the VXR.
"Run ins" are all very well but hardly controlled - I've seen off mucvh faster cars before just because the drivers have either not been committed or just been poor - Doesn't mean my car has been faster.
You're starting to sound quite chavvy making all these claims with no back up - yes the VXR is quick but it's still a FWD hatch with no LSD. Hardly the basis for going from A to B faster than anything else on the road.

Oh yes your right of course! the other drivers were driving with one hand and only using half throttle. Of course they were how can a newer lighter similar powered car with less transmission loss hope to beat a old overweight golf.
The top gear test was poor, not even the full VXR, (wrong runing gear) Autocar did a 0-100 test on about 20 cars last year that showed the VXR with a time of 14.2-100, if i was at home i would scan it in.

Just as Evo mag, Autocar, Top Gear and many others CANNOT time acceleration figures properly eh?
Now, would you like me to present you with more FACTS or are you going to carry on about racing a cars off the lights in a 30 zone and thrashing them?
Always makes me laugh when people make bold claims then can't back them up one bit.

Never have raced people from the lights, not even when i had scoobies. I believe that the Evo mag also used press pre-production figures for the VXR as well. Top Gear have just sent the stig round the track again with the full VXR, it will be up shortly i imagine thats why the old time has been taken off, it went round the track over 2 seconds quicker than last time.

But Evo mag have a VXR as a long termer and the genuinely DO like it.
Anyway, I think this one has been exhausted.
The 200PS Astra, the VXR and the R32 are all quick cars.
And having now been driving a 150PS CDTi for two years after serious vandalism trouble with the Golf, I desperately want to run something properly quick again.
Something much quicker than the Golf!

As much as i like the Astra you cannot get away from the laws of physics, weight transfer and all that, you can only put so much power through the front wheels, Four wheel drive whether it be in a Golf, Scooby, whatever will always have an advantage in putting its power down on the road.
what are we looking at here?
Straight line drag race?
Track performance?
On road abilty?
It really depends on what you want, Once rolling i would imagine the Astra would take it due to less transmission loss and a lower weight, but on a drag strip surely the advantage a four wheel drive launch would give you would be hard to claw back over 1/4 mile (i may be wrong)
Track performance - well you only have to look at Clio Cup race cars to to see how well they handle a track but these are out and out stripped out racers, a VXR has a great wallop of Turbocharged Torque going through its front wheels and i would imagine this would make it not nice at all on anything other than billiard smooth bone dry tracks.
A lot of mags have prefered the on track performance of the lesser powered MK5 Golf GTI.
And as for on the road - well its a no brainer really.
Until the likes of Ford and Vauxall release all wheel drive versions then they wont be troubling the likes of Subarus, EVO's and the like for some time.

Been considered but it would have to be at least an STi and I do rather favour a decent boot so that rules it out.
I like the Scooby a lot but I'm afraid I would go for an Evo if I wanted a slightly mad 4x4 rally rep.
Who knows what will happen though?
I'm looking at the 335d Touring, the Evo FQ360 and many others too!

Two very different cars and different opinions. It's all banter

Oh god here we go again.
Four and a half star Evo car, won a major group test, timed by many at just over 15s to 100 but Evo mag at 16.4.
Now your going to tell me your green boxed Astra is MUCH quicker?
I was going to chip mine too but I really don't think the chassis or gearbox would cope so am leaving it and waiting until I can get a "proper" fast car again.
