Problem with an A4 - 1998 diesel

It won't start. I managed to get it going at one poit and it sounded lumpy. Then the glow plug light started to flash and it stalled. Since then, it turns over but will not fire. Also the oil warning light has come on but there is plenty of oil in it.

Any suggestions

Drag start it.
Sounds like a wire might of come off somewhere around the engine bay.
Maybe the alternator or battery is buggered.

Charged the battery up (as it was getting a bit flat) and tried again.

Took ages to start but eventually did (eventhough the oil light came on again) and a plume of black smoke from the exhaust.

Now seems to run ok and starts as normal.

Its the first diesel i have had - any ideas or is it just a clitch.....

It is cold harder for diesels as they rely on glow plugs even more so at this time of year.

could be glow plugs, or even the relay that controls then, have had that on my pug diesel.

When you say the oil light came on do you mean after it started whilst running or just lingered on a little and went out after you started it?

check oil level and when it was last changed/how good is the oil.
