Daily hack?
Want something that's cheap to buy (<£1000), cheap to insure and run (>35mpg) that'll cope with 80mph on the motorway BUT that's fun to drive.

you will get a fairly decent mondeo for £1k. Not sure you will get 35mpg out of the 1.8 petrol though. My old man got 30ish out of his (mostly stop start though so if its motorway maybe you will get 35+)

Check out the touring mpg figure in the Autocar test (36.9) Here
It's also a nice handling car and keeps your fleet with a Nissan theme

I'll say it again - 306 diesel. Easily do the mpg, big enough for mways, handles well, good strong engines.
For more of an oddball choice how about trying to track down one of the earliest 'performance' diesels - Citroen ZX Volcane!

also had a primera eGT years back, good car that also did 35-40 depending on the trip.
primera was nice motor but you can get a newer mondy for your money (1999 1.8 70k 12 mnths mot was £825 and there were lots of choice in this price range)

my mondeo 1.8 averages 35mpg, mostly main roads with a bit of town.

Depends whether you just want something to click the miles off with ...but I still think the Primera will be a bit more fun to drive - although the Mondeo steers very nicely as well

Crikey, the Soarer costs more to run than the GTR
I'm looking for something to run in the week that's cheap so I don't bankrupt myself running the Skyline.
I like the Primera idea actually, it'd make a good parts chaser for the GTR and the Soarer which I'm contemplating using for drag racing (don't tell MrsREV)
