Default Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi

Just bought one of these for MrsREV. Seems a lot of car for the money. We got a year old ES spec (cruise control, dual zone climate, panoramic glass roof thingy) for £13k with only 9k on the clock.

Had a drive before and found the handling etc. to be excellent and the engine as pretty rapid too, just too narrow a powerband for my liking and too low down the rev range.

Very easy car to speed in though, it seems to have very little sensation of the actual speed you're doing!

The best bit is, thanks to the dreadful fuel consumption on the wife's current Forester and the excellent consumption on the Civic, it's costing us "nothing" to buy a pratically new car (i.e. no more than we're shelling out on the current 9 year old 80,000 mile Subaru anyway).

seems like you got it for a good price, the 2.2 diesel is a pretty quick engine and really realible but i would say that i do work for them!! glad you happy with you buy but what made you buy it in the first place? the panoramic roof realy makes the cabin space feel huge does'nt it!!

I like the look of them and we were looking for a sporty, economical family car. MrsREV saw one and decided that was the car for her (before seeing the Honda she wanted a Peugeot 308, yuk!). I love the interior and it seems very well built. We pick it up either tomorrow or tuesday. It's actually an ex-Honda UK car. It wasn't your company motor was it?

I know someone with an Accord company car with that has just passed 130k on the clock. Its never missed a beat, but he has had probs with the electrics. I thinks though that 3 breakdowns with that mileage is not bad at all.

Andy seems to have had many problems with his, but ours has been running perfect since we bought it last Feb, superb cars and I really am very happy with ours.

The space inside is excellent, and I'm still amazed how much you can fit in them. Wait til you use the magix seats in the back as well Notorius, they are excellent, especially for shipping large items about - mountain bike etc.

The auto lights and wipers work really well also, plus we average 57mpg on a long run, 40-45 around town. Cheap tax as well, £110 a year.

I quite like these, was having a poke around a new Type-S GT in the showroom the other day.. and it looked really nice, the MPG figures are unbelievably good!!

Is it not also true that you can buy a plug-in tuning box, or get an ecu re-flash to give VAG TD-style results (180bhp+)??

Cheers,
Grant

Superchips get good results (190bhp/320 lb/ft, although they claim less than that)

lordlucan on here had his re-mapped last week to 195bhp.

I haven't bothered yet as its still in warranty and its our family car so always has the little un inside. Apparently Honda can see if the ECU has been re-mapped, even if you put it back to normal before it goes on, so I dont want to risk the warranty.

Bit of a double post here as i posted in the chat about Type R.

...but anyone got any thoughts on the 1.8 petrol v diesel.

I am not too worried about the fuel economy, but driveability considering the 2.2 is about £1500 extra - I am thinking about the Type S GT.

I understand also the 2.2 is easy to re map.

Cheers

Well they both have the same power but the 2.2 has way more torque, gets double MPG and costs half to tax so there are some good savings to be had if you keep it for a while and do plenty of miles.

I love the low down torque of the diesel, effortless driving.

My wife has a Petrol Civic (1.8 EX) and it has been back for a number of things (her last Civic, 1.8VTi, didn't have any warrenty issues in 8 years of ownership). Fuel cap not opening has been the worse, Honda have tried to fix it on 4 occasions without much success (this happens to all Civics apparently, but is now resolved with a new design mechanism). She even had to call out the AA to open the fuel cap in a petrol station. There is a recall for the handbrake and one of her mirrors needed replacing.

The things I don't like are the poor rear visibility, water comes off the rear hatch when you open it and you get a shower, no rear wash wipe. It's generally a good car but just not up to Honda's normal standards.

Well so far:-

ECU replace twice
flat battery/ replacement three times
2 sets of shocks on the rear
1 set of shocks on the front
Rubbish radio reception
Fuel filler cap stuck in twice even after mod to fix it

The car has only done 11k
To round if off the customer service has been terriblre from Honda UK. They could not even sort out paying for te hire car while it was in being fixed. Took 3 months and a solicters letter to get them to pay.

Test drove a 2.2 Type S GT last week. Really nice car, with more than decent poke for everyday driving. The most un-diesel like diesel ive driven.

It has got all the gadgets as std too - cruise, dual zone climate, MP3 CD, panoramic sunroof, auto lights, auto wipers, folding mirrors, steering wheel controls, alcantara seats. I love the interior layout too - makes everthing else look dated.

In black with a set of 18" Blades, the image pack and a Type-R grille they really look the dogs.

Having said that im looking at Golf's at the moment as Ive got a bad back, and want the DSG box. Unfortunately Honda dont have an equivalent or I'd get the Civic.

Picked ours up last night and drove it home for MrsREV. It's a great car and cruises brilliantly at 85 (kph, obviously ) on cruise control with about 2000rom on the rev counter, dead smooth and dead quiet. It's kind of eerie how it doesn't "feel" fast, but when you look at the speedo you're doing 20mph more than you thought.

I also like the fact that it has more interior space than the Forester but looks small.

You're not kidding! Did that last night, the engine bay is tiny. I wouldn't want to work on it.

tell me about it, my job is an electrical repairer on the civic and the diesel is a tricky engine to work on wait till you see the 1.4 engine bay looks like a baked bean in a tin loads of room = easy to work on!!!

1 week in:

Why is the fuel consumption only 38mpg? Did others find that it got better as it loosened up?

I had the Previous model Civic on an 02 Plate with the 1.7CTDI Izuzu diesel in it. Never got more than 35 mpg out of it, sent it to the dealers 5 times, and each time they said they fixed it, it came back the same. I gave up and dropped it off at Swindon factory and threatened to call the media if something wasn't done about it. They got it up to 45mpg. I gave up eventually sold it and bought a 3 year old mondeo which is still doing 55 mpg for my mum now. Honda kept saying it was my right foot!!. I pointed out that the 10 year old golf diesel with 168k on the clock with a knackered turbo was doing 50+mpg on the day I PXed it, and the engine was bigger with the same HP.

My father-in-law has a black one with the 18" diamond cut optional alloys on it, along with the silver front and rear bumper garnishes, looks brilliant! awesome cars, loads of low down poke. I've driven it several times and love driving it, if I could afford a fairly new diesel car as a daily runner then I would buy one of these at a drop of a hat! He averages late 40's to the gallon and sometimes into early 50's on a good run.

[QUOTE]

My grandad is a member of the IMI with a lot of swing before he retired. Check your records it was there 10 days and had a new turbo, injectors and was remapped. (on a car with 15k on the clock)
Figures quoted by the dealer when I bought it were 60+mpg. About what you would expect from a small 1.7 diesel.
The dealer in question lost his franchise and now sells Suzuki's.

Please note I loved the car, better to drive than my old Golf, nimble in the corners and quiet. It was only the economy that galled.

Depends what sort of driving and who drives it. When my Mrs uses it for work during the week we get about 45mpg, mainly town driving.

When I drive it round town it goes down to 38 as I have a heavy right foot. On a long run and taking it easy it will reach 57mpg.

We're only doing extra urban and motorway driving, both of us driving and it's only getting 38 (on the computer, anyway). I'll wait until we fill it up and calculate it properly.
