I had an E36 M3 3.0 and it was a cracking car
The 3.2 Evos are less reliable. The Vanos units are notorious for failing and cost around £2000 to replace. The 6 speed gearboxs are weaker than the 3.0's 5 speed.
Rear shocks, mounts and trailing arm bushes are also a problem on both models.
If I was going to have another M3 i'd have the 3.0 over the 3.2 Evo

If it's a Mway muncher, why an E36 M3?
Surely some kind of modern turbo diesel would be better? An 'older' performance car like an M3 is going to likely have been driven hard, will be expensive on insurance and fuel, and expensive to repair if (when) it goes wrong?
Just IMHO.

No problem
I should probably add that there is a hell of alot of dogs on the market so be very careful when looking for an M3.
A good condition, well looked after M3 will be a joy to own but a bad condition M3 will cost you an absolute fortune !

My current wheels is a E36 M3 Evo convertible, and had 2 other 4 door saloons in the past. Great cars and do like them hence on my third, but they are not as fun as most jap stuff, but still cracking cars and pretty bullet proof by all accounts.
Look for FSH, and make sure the oil filter in the vanos has been changed at every service. The £15 oil filter in the vanos is the cause of most vanos failures, not the unit itself.
They like to be driven hard to exploit there full potential.
On a motorway a good spec TDI will probably give more punch for quick throttle manouvers at say 70-80 foot down moments than the M3.
To Get the M3 really going you need to drop 3 cogs at 70mph.
The M3 feels like a Heavy car to drive as well. Great cars but if you have never driven one I would recoomend a test drive. If I were doing lots of miles I would give serious consideration to the SMG.

I have also found this, that despite being a 3.2ltr, its returning good MPG for a performance car. Couldn't tell you what MPG, but Its noticebly better than any scoob I have had. But this could be more because I feel less inclinded to use the right foot as much these days.

I forgot to mention the Vanos oil filter I've been told that even BMW main dealers don't bother changing it at service
Regarding the SMG model,I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole, they are too unreliable and cost mega bucks to repair !
