Default Another what car thread...

Not buying but interested in peoples thoughts on a bit of fantasy shopping.

13-15k
Saloon or coupe, not a convertible
0-60 under 8 secs
< 60k miles
Later than 2002
Large displacement non turbo prefered.
Must sound great.

No eco or fuel comsumption concerns.

All I can come up with is S4 and Monaro, anything else fit the bill?

I'd stick to a CLK 55 AMG rather than the CL

got bored

No idea on what the V6 Saab's sound like, I've only ever owned 4 pot turbo saabs. I'm sure there will be decent exhausts available..

Didn't think the CLK55 had broken 15 yet, will have to check.

wwsd - M3 not allowed, never rated how it sounds.

Must admit, the figures for a V6 9-3 look intriguing....

Yeah, I really like the S60-R but a bit too much of a sleeper for this set of criteria.

Prices tumbling too so lower miles becoming available.
Wish they did the same setup in the non convertible coupe.

I have the Saab 9-3 Aero, its ok but not "Special", its fast but not fun, the V6 version might have more character but I wouldn't buy another, the ride is ropey, trim iffy and the vacuum cleaner has more soul, it does its job but it makes an Audi A4 look charismatic.

Ooooh, indicative of tumbling prices, this is almost on the list:

Great colour too.

Mint mk4 R32 Golf?

Not as loony as many on here but they sound great, go well and are a lot of fun, especially with a 300bhp AMD conversion.

You can get a Mk5 Golf for £15k, or an Audi A3 for less. Or get your wig off in a tart's TT V6 rag-bag

But what's wrong with the S4 Hank? I'm well tempted myself. 350bhp, 4.2 V8, 4WD, DSG box, 4 doors/seats, low key, nice interior, good build. You can get a facelift 05 for £15k. What's not to like? All the big Audis are absolutely tumbling like Mercs at the minute.

Personally, I think you're a Vel Satis man, but luckily they are well below your price range

Richard.

Nothing at all wrong with an S4 (not DSG tho, only tip and I do like the idea of full time 4WD and a v8) but I have an A3 and am a bit bored with it, esp the interior.
A new interior would be nice for a while rather than the same one 4% bigger (I made that bigger bit up).
That rules the Monaro out as well as the interior is shocking (I put my foot through the speaker grille of one once).

645 a bit of a beast for my tastes.
CLK 55 AMG is top of the tree at the mo I think.
My old boss has a maser 4200 and I would love one but the servicing really puts me off, even at independents.

R32 is OK but I think too close to the A3 I think, also finding a nice 3 door with half leather has been more difficult in the past, they all seemed to be full.

But all academic at the mo, no doubt when I've got some money to spend, the market will be all over the place and different criteria required.

As for the Vel Satis comment -
Although I think if you were just wafting round the motorway network, you could do a lot worse but I like my cars to be a bit more (although I hate using the term) sporty.

AMG with full F1 pack it is then

Interesting thread. A guy at work and I have been discussing this kind of budget to use as a third car. He's got a daily hack and the missus has a 'family car'.

He is looking at either a Boxster, M3 or 330 Coupe. As his mileage is going to be quite limited, he's not over concerned about the running cost. Out of the 3 I've suggested the 330. However, I also would have plumped for the M5.

Just to be a bit leftfield, I also suggested the Jaguar XKR

Do like an XKR but manual are very hard to come by and not really something to nip to the shops in.

As a third car, would deffo be looking at Boxster or maybe the Lotus Sunbeam that's on PH at the mo with only 6000 miles on it but that's a whole other discussion

DSG box got re-named Tip to differentiate from VW I think. Not sure if the dual-clutch thing applies to the meg-power Audis also, but I'm sure it does in the S4, IIRC. Gonna drive one later this week so we'll see

If your A3 is not a 3.2, you'll find it a completely different drive. The V6 is a seriously classy engine but due to emmissions we'll not see it's like again in a small car. I find a 2l turbo is not the same at all. Not worse/better, just different. Even Audi's gem of a 4.2 V8 is now history, and has become a supercharged V6 in newer cars. Again, not 100% on this - still learning about Audis.

R32 is quite a different interior to the A3, though obviously functionally similar, it's a different place to be.

Richard.

He's quite a big lad (6ft 3). I did suggest he should try to get in one as I had great difficulty getting in and out when I tried one (I'm a little bit bigger). Trying to find a comfortable seating postion proved almost impossible.

I sort of lied when I said it was his 3rd car. On top of everything he's got a home, he's also got a Pug 1.9 GTI he's had since new with 32k on the clock dry stored & up on axle stands at his Dad's farm. I've kindly offered him £500 CASH if he needs to get rid of it when he buys his new car

Nah, A4 doesn't get DSG till next year (maybe this year now). In this price band, it's definitely tip so not quite the dual clutch experience you've been having lately. You're right on the V8/V6 thing which I think is kind of why I would like a big V8 before they fall out of the mainstream.

On the R32, it just doesn't do it for me from the inside. I love the TT but the golf is just not as special.

V6 TT would almost fit the bill but would have to be in orange.
