I turned up late for work one morning because one of the final episodes of Magnum was on TV, the one where they were going to reveal who Robin Masters really was. They didn't

Dad's mates and Dad hired Goodwood for a day a while back.
Dad had his 928, his mate had his 328 GTS and others had decent cars.
After a few laps the 328 span but didn't hit anything. I later spotted (I was about 10) a dent in the upper rear bonnet. Turns out the spin had bent the chassis and the car was a write off!!
Been suspicious of Ferraris ever since.
The inlaws 355 was a nightmare too- very flimsy and Dad's "pretend" Ferrari (308 GT4) was also a big headache.
Yet all his Quattros and Porkers were trouble free.

Aye.I've got to that age now where I let the GTI brigade zoom off now though
Read an article in Classic and Sports car where they took one cruising round Italy.Looked fantastic.Even got to the end of the trip
Think cruising + nice noise + nice looks would be it.

I've had loads of 308's and 328's. The 308GTBi was badly slow but the older Carb/plastic ones and the QV and 328s were pretty quick.
Although once i was in a 328 with a mate and a 5-up Fiat Punto Turbo kept up with me at any speed from 20-70mph no problem

must have been one hell of a punto to carry all that weight and keep up with a 328, isn't a 328 about 280bhp? i'd still have one, hell, scoobs are not all that fast and i've got one of them, so a 'not all that fast' ferrari 328 would do me too .

I had a do with a 360 in a Fiat Coupe Turbo, remapped but otherwise standard, sure the Ferrari was quicker but not by the margin I expected, drove one on a driving day and it was quick-ish but not shockingly so, what did impress was the way you can wind it out and it keeps on pulling and how it sounds, makes turbo's seem a bit soulless, regardless of the performance.

There are a lot of crap ones around. I've driven ones that are mint, not a mark on them, ultra low mileage and they drove like crap. I've only driven One that was like it would have been when it was new imo and that was awesome. The maintenance costs on them are silly if you want them to drive "right". I'd estimate that any one that you bought for £25k would need another £10k+ mimimum spending on it to make it drive anything like it did when it was new.

Sure there are lots of downsides the most obvious one being the cost of running the thing and fixing it when it goes wrong and it can be a complete pain to drive in lots of ways but if you are a petrolhead owning a supercar is one of those dreams you have and owing a classic supercar is a way of fulfilling that dream at a fraction of the cost of buying a new one.
If I have to sell my car I would be sad but at least I will have had the experience. That is what all this is about and ownership of a 308 will share much of the same highs and lows, though to a different extent of course.

And the 288GTO is still one of my all time favourites - sort of based on the 308.

I was thinking Top Trumps as soon as Paul posted the De Tomaso
Nice post though.Thats my feelings on classics and maybe one day I can get my dream classic. My view of modern cars is they are disappointing.Clever but boring and disappointing
What is this 1973 classic you have? I'm guessing Maserati?

We've got a 348 out in Australia. Whilst its lovely, jumping out of that and in to the 550 makes the old one feel like a toy car.
The 308's even more so- they feel rather antique now. Still very special though, the way they make you feel. I've lost count of the times people have video'd me on their mobiles- it does make you feel rather special- which I ain't, I'm usually just putting them in containers headed for brisbane

De Tomaso Pantera, you,ve got to love the looks even after 35 years.
I always remember waiting for the last bus home in Leeds (in the 80s) and a white one pulled out of a T junctions. A pop of blue and yellow flame after each gear change as he nailed it down Kirkstall road
Happy days

I don't have a Ferrari but I do have a classic Italian supercar and you just have a different mindset when driving it and enjoy different things. You know (in this case) that it was built in 1973, you know that when it was built it was one of the two fastest cars on earth BUT that things have moved on considerably. The difference is you are driving something special, something that makes you smile when you open the garage door and take the cover off and something that makes one of the greatest noises on earth. I can promise you you really don't give a flying fig if some berk in a hot hatch thinks he has got one over on you buy beating you away from the lights. It is also great fun driving a car that brings pleasure to other people, I have lost count of the number of times people have come up to me to say how good it is to see their favourite Top Trump in the metal.
