Default Recommend a good cheapo car for travel to/from work..

Hi,

As per the title, I am looking to get a cheap (sub £1000) run around to get to work and back however I want something that will be a bit of fun to drive.

I have been looking at a few classic cars, dunno why but I really fancy getting my hands on an old classic that I can use for tavelling, have some fun in and tinker with at the weekend.

I was really after a Datsun 240Z but seems they are suddenly quite rare and pricey so thats out of the window (anyone recommend a similar type of sporty jap motor from that era?).

Had a look around at some Pug 205 1.9 GTi's but couldn't find an unabused standard example for the right money.

Came across a semi decent Pug 106 Rallye but thinking it's bit of a girly car but I am thinking it would be a lot of fun to drive... but then again I could just go out and buy a classic Mini in that case.

My brief is as follows:

Classic or would-be-classic hot hatch, coupe or down right odd vehicle that you would not find a 30 something in..

So if you had about £1k to spend, what would you get and why?

Mk2 Golf GTi? Cheap to fix, you should be able to get a good one for a grand or so, especially if you go for a 5 door that no-one seems to like...

Is fuel economy important? Old school Beemer, e30 325, e28 or e34 5 series are a good laugh. You might be able to find an e24 6 series too if you're lucky. As long as it isn't rusty parts will be cheap. E28's and e24's are a good call, classic cars but reliable (not stone age at least) running gear and still good to drive.

Porsche 944? I paid 800 ish for a reasonable one, parts are a wee bit expensive but nice to drive, if you don't get a shed.

Saab 900 Turbo-proper one pre 93ish, not one of the horrible cavalier chassied things that replaced it.

Jap wise you'd get an old Supra for that mopney, good luck with it though. Nissan Silvias are nice to drive, not sporty though, a 200sx is nice too but most have been ragged. Struggling to think of anything else jap, retro and cheap enough.

Good luck though!

Brian

P.S. Don't go buying an e28 BMW M535, at least not until I've had my pick of them in a couple of months

I'd love a classic mini but they seem to be very expensive.A cheap one I guess would be rough

You'll find more on here on the Mk3. Something rings a bell about rust and engine problems though, maybe head gaskets?

Something light small and zippy IMO. Another thumbs up for a 306 S16 or GTI6 if you cant get one for that money.

Got a GTI6 myself at the moment and have come from cars 10-20 times more expensive and having just as much fun with it.

Another option is a normally aspirated MR2. Should get a tidy 1.6 Mk1 for that money of possibly a 2.0 Mk2. Have had both of these and again huge grin factor, and feel like your in a proper sports car.

Yep, pretty much what I want, a light nippy car that shows off the strange side to my personality.

Mini's are great but I have seen the problems you get with early cheapo ones as my mate found out, spend almost as much on getting the car right as he did when he bought it.

I've had a Mk2 GTi 16v before, great cars so might take a look at the earlier Mk1 GTi's - whatever I decide on it should be around the £1k mark and have some kind of sporty element to it.

Mind you in this cold weather an R5 Turbo would be fun, no cold feet thanks to all the heat coming through the engine bay lol

try the 106 rallye, or even a saxo vts or 106 gti,

my choice would be the rallye,

great fun car, cheap to run, and you will allways get your money back if you look after it

I agree. Had a look on Pistonheads last night and the 1.7's are betweel £900 and £1700. A Racing Puma is only £4495

If you're remotely tall, try a 306 before you buy. I can't sit upright in them because of the low roof line and the 5 door cars tend to be even worse. Which was particularly gutting at the time. :-(

I've just bought a 1997 E36 BMW 328i Coupe for under a grand.

Not a classic, but reliable and smooth.

You definitely need a RWD car.
Whats the point in getting a ****ter to abuse if you cant hang the **** end out on every roundabout?

Volvo : Volvo 340GL 1.7 3door!!
Perfect! and yes I am being serious about the second one. I had one and converted it to a drift car and it was a hoot to drive. 400 miles to a 30quid tank of fuel as well.
