it really looks like a step backwards in my opinion compared to the last gen Golf

The front looks very crap and plasticy to be honest, always liked Golfs too.

I quite like the new Golf. Waiting to see what TDI engines they stick in it. Would like to see a 200BHP+ TDI version with AWD.

Would upgrade my current 08 170 GT sport.

VW have played it too safe with the Golf for too long.

Yes the mk5/6 chassis is a corker but it looks too much like a Civic or any other bland hatch to me.

Also mildly appalled at how they made the mk4 R32 look pretty damn good but trashed the mk5 R32 with that awful chrome grille, naff tailpipes and dire alloys. The mk5 GTi looked much better.

i personally think the new Golf has a few Audi A3 styling cues upfront.

Most modern hatches play it super safe which results in them all looking the same. They are designed to look 'nice and unoffensive'. Both those Golf images just look like focus, mazda, seat type clone to me in a sort of blobby way. I don't think anyone would really 'notice' one - and that's the design I guess. Something like the civic is a bit more adventurous, but then it just looks cheap and tacky.

I agree with the first post that the styling is getting duller and less unique / Golf like with each revision.

Mk6 has gone back to the Mk4 look, now that the bumper runs all the way across the front. I prefer the Mk5, but others say the new nose is good. At least it's now clearly different to Audi's big-gob snout

Winterkorn wants VW to look different to audi, he thought the Mk5 front looked TOO audi.
