Nothing wrong with the DSG box and no problems that I'm aware of. In fact, just bought the missus a TT with DSG and have been extremely impressed. Fantastic invention
I kind of think the original DSG might have been over-engineered for reliability on introduction as it was such a radical new concept. Certainly the torque capacity was artificially limited so that clutch plates would last for the life of the car. But this can be adjusted substantially by upping the hydraulic pressure. In fact the whole thing can be reprogrammed if you don't like the shift patterns.
It's a shame that DSG has only been available in smaller cars with transverse motors until now. But recently dual-clutch gearboxes have been inroduced by almost every major manufacturer - for all the wong reasons! Because DSG shifts so quickly and imperceptively, makers have loaded their boxes with too many ratios (like 7 ) and a programme that shuffles them into super-economy mode for impressive headline mileage figures. If you switch over to manual and use a bit of performance, no way will these cars return the mpg that's claimed - like 30% more economical than preceding models
So while I love the concept which should be fab for performance driving, I suspect dual-clutch boxes might actually get a bit of bad rep from enthusiasts. But I hope not. DSG is great
