Mk V golf GTi Values
I've just had a look on Autotrader at the costs of a GTi, less than 3 years old. And they are astronomic!
Are these sorts of prices realistic or just dealers who haven't realised that cars aren't selling?

I had Mk 5 Golf 2.0 FSI - It was fully loaded list price 21k.
It was nothing but trouble , including 2 x air con pumps, split water hoses, new head gasket, pealing interior, couldn't wait to give it back-admittedly it was an early 2004 car and they have solved some of the issues, VW leasing wanted 9k for it 3 years old 40 k , and this was before the market dropped.
I have seen then at white city trade center for between 6500 to 8500 depending on the spec, saw also a 08 plate 1.4TFSI 140bhpSport 2k miles 12k not bad.
Personally I saved a heap of cash and bought a new diesel SEAT Leon simply as its exactly the same thing but with a different badge. 2nd hand Leon's are cheap as chips compared with the Mk 5's more late Mk 4 prices.
The SEAT'S have the same engine, indicator stalks, seats, button, chassis, and in most cases compared like for like they are better spec'ed than the Golf's too.
The only thing which I find wrong with the Leon is the boot narrows to the bottom and has about inch less leg room in the back otherwise I actually think it is better than a Golf as its cheaper and better built as I've had the Leon a year with no problems thus far unlike the Golf.
R32's are nothing special a Golf GTI 230 and Leon 240 K1 are with it in terms of performance, the R32 has a edge in the handling department and is well planted on the road but with the heavy 6 cylinder engine and 4x4 runnning gear it can get boged down with the other two feeling alot more nimble and the Leon again having the edge in performance.
Hope this helps, however, do remember if you really wana be a tight you can always buy a Skoda VRs, even cheaper and faster

I've been looking at Mk5 GTis, tbh, from what I can see, the prices have been pretty much in a free fall!
OK - £20K new, but a 3yr old used example with 20K on the clock (loaded with satnav, leather and the arm rest, and perhaps sunroof), they're going for around £10K....
Fantastic price -

before I bought my impreza, I toyed with golf gti or r32. decided not, as after having had about 10 vw's- on the whole, nothing but trouble.
had a new mk4 golf some years ago- try 35 trips back to dealer in 18 mths.
I bought the scooby on basis of reliability etc and its been faultless.
and the subaru dealer, compared to vw and their staff isn't a total ****.
unless its an r32, the golf gti- will just be another golf--- bland bland.
and on my way to york yesterday I had a nice tussle with a gti and left it for dust
