Default Had a nice blast tonight

Had to drop my grandparents back home in Oldham tonight, on the way back I happened across a lovely Escort Cosworth, really looked and sounded the part, was behind it and went up the bypass, he accelerated a bit and I matched him and then it was obvious there was a little fun to be had, road was clear so for a few roundabouts with gave it some, nothing ridiculous, backing off for other cars, no brain out maneuvering and no insane speeds.

Gets to Wilmslow and he turns off, slows down, probably to have a look what had been stuck (at a respectful and safe distance) to his chuff, bloke in a wooly hat with a big grin on his face goes "You enjoy that", I replied in the affirmative and said "Catch you later", of we go, I was buzzing as I never get the opportunity as I don't do that much driving and Saabs don't shout "fun", nice to have a dabble with a Escort Cosworth, dont see many, nice to see the lad enjoying it.

He may have been letting me keep up but I was surprised how well mine did, considering its only got 210 bhp (removed the 250 map for the time being due to the clutch objecting), I was expecting utter annihilation but it just pulled a little on me.

Nice to meet a fellow petrolhead, P** COS I salute you !

Been in a 330bhp Escort Cosworth and was very dissapointed, it felt old and not as fast as I thought it would have been, handling wasnt to great either, but I had to remember that these cars are 15 years old, but they still hold there price so I did expect it to a bit better then a standard turbo 2000, but it just wasnt. It was one of my all time favourite cars until I went in one.

Never underestimate sleek FWD barges. I used to love hanging onto the back of Scooby's (even standard classics) from 60-to-double-that in an old leather clad Pug 406.

Watching them tap their boost gauge inquisitively at the next roundabout was worth it's weight in gold*

* this never actually happened

I drove my Uncle's 330bhp Sapphire cosworth, and it felt seriously quick. Cosworth engines are a totally different power delivery. Subaru's are deceptively quick in comparison: just as fast, but they don't feel it.

My Uncle's was a late 4wd on a J plate IIRC. He sold it last year with 26K on the clock. Spent about 9 years just sitting about in his garage mainly, and when he bought it, it had been in a farmers shed tucked away nicely.

He always had the quick cars of the time when I was growing up, infact I think the first car I ever drove would have been a 2wd Sapphire he had new. Was sat on his knee steering it round the farm when I was about 4.

Would have loved to have bought it, but the insurance would have just killed me at 20 - that's why I bought the UK Turbo Impreza. Was gutted though.

Don't forget Cossie's are the most over exagerated BHP cars around, don't ever believe the figure's most people quote becuase they are prob way wrong, and even if it did it once with proof, it will be down on that again after a few years.

I once easily kept up with a 450bhp Sapp Cossie upto silly speeds (so the bloke told me at a previous meet), I was in my dyno'd and mapped 322bhp (only few weeks before) Pulsar Gti-R and there was no way i would of kept up with him if he really had that sort of power once we got way above 100+. I've kept up with a mates 508bhp rwd Skyline gts low down and through loads of bends, but once the straights really opened up he started to pull away, you notice the power difference then and see its genuine.

There's also a huge different between quoted tuners conversions for the same power when they test them back to back...... remember clarkson's dvd, the normal looking/fully trimmed M.A.D. escort cossie beat all the other escort cossies and he certainly wasn't quoting above 330bhp, some of the others were saying over 450bhp lol and easily got beat.

I was surprised as mine isnt all that quick in the scheme of things, had a go in my mates WR1 that is 320 bhp and that would murder mine, when standard, when its mapped, all day long and most Escort Cosworths are nowadays far from standard and as a minimum run 300 bhp plus by way of the usual chip, filter and exhaust, most have had fancy managment, bigger injectors, bigger turbos etc etc.

I'd still love a mint standard Imperial Blue Escort Cosworth.

Wouldn't touch it modding wise. I know they're pretty slow by todays standards, but even today, they have such a presents on the road. Saw a White one the other week. Look the dogs Bollox. Would just take it out on a sunny Sunday morning and enjoy just driving it around.

One of my favorite cars of all time.

Not the car I thought!

There's a 380BHP Auralis blue one near Oldham, (Mossley I think?) that was tuned by Rusty (Famous local guy with the 4wd RS500 Cosworth CAPRI (550bhp IIRC) that was on the clarkson video)
