Porker 996 Turbos

At that age you'll struggle to get a warranty on it from anywhere and although the engines are pretty strong, unless you know the history, I'd be afraid of things going 'pop'.
It's all very well buying that sort of car for a 'cheap' price, but getting it serviced and running it properly are another thing.
Not something I'd do, but you pays your money.....

The whole difficulty of buying this sort of car at this money is sorting out your backup, ie the people who will be able to work on it for reasonable money when it all goes **** up.
Quite frankly the price of a 996 TT is getting extremely close to when I will seriously consider selling a kidney.
I mean 2y ago I never thought there was a hope in hells' chance of me ever owning one.
I'm spending a lot of time reading old copies of EVO. AMG SL55 also....just keep on dropping a bit further!

The thing with this type of car, is the actual running costs.
Porsche warranty (a must on a Turbo) £1350
Insurance - £600 approx
Tax - £400
MOT - £40
Service - £500 (guest price as not sure yet)
So for it to sit in your garage doing nothing, it's going to cost approx £3000 a year. OK, that doesn't sound much, but then you've got:-
Petrol which will be a couple grand a year.
Tyres - Ain't going to be cheap and won't last long either
Brake pads & discs - Ain't going to be cheap
Plus with cars like these, you can't scimp on parts etc.
Buying the car is one thing, running it is going to be costly.

Got to be a very brave man who buys a £100K car for £25K!

Just this minute got back from the auctions (BCA).
A stunning 02 black 996 Turbo went through, with 40k & FPSH, all for £29,800. The auctioneer reckoned it book at £31,500 in Glasses and about the same in CAP.
If I had been in a position to bid, my hand would have gone up like shot

If you could give me some info I'd appreciate it.
When I get mine I'm not going to go for the OPC warranty and places like Hartech are too far away for me.
Some (like the RAC) don't cover many items on the Turbo and also seem to set the garage labour rates way to low - like £40 per hour.
I've looked into quite a few and read some horror stories of warranty companies not covering things you'd expect to be covered.

Last time I tried that they wouldn't cover the 996 Turbo.
Also, the claims limit was too low for an engine (£14K for the engine plus fitting).
Edited - Just had a look.
They'll cover upto £100 ph for engine/drivetrain and wear and tear for about £1k per annum.
Worth looking into it a bit more

Re warranty - the 2 main companies are RSJ (Slough) and Hartech (Bolton).
They both offer fairly good packages.
Porsche will only cover cars with no modifications (and I mean none at all) now on their new scheme. And its only for cars 9 years or younger, i.e 2001 or newer.

AFAIK RSJ only warranty cars that they have sold.
Hartech runs a planned service scheme not a warranty. Having said that it is a good scheme. You pay a fixed amount a year for servicing. If there is a problem they provide the labour, you pay for the parts. They repair engines. They do not replace them.

Plus the GT3 is seen as the Driver's 911. More desirable = more expensive.

I spoke to Baz at Hartech some time ago, and RSJ and Sport & Classic.
None of them are doing warranties for the 996 TT.
I've spoken to Zentrum here in Notts but they don't think they'll be doing a warranty any time soon.
I'm a bit stuck to be honest as I've heard mixed reports about Warrantywise, but at the moment they seem to be my only choice (unless I want to spend £3-4K to get an OPC warranty).

I almost bought a 9-year-old 996 with 70k miles (it got sold). But I couldn't get any meaningful warranty without buying from the likes of Hartech.
My plan was a) to pay a bit more to get the right car, and b) put some cash aside to effectively fund my own warranty. I figured that if I was pushing my finances so far that I couldn't afford to do that, then I couldn't realistically afford a Porsche full stop.
I had a chat with a good local specialist who was very reassuring about costs. He said he had never charged more than £4k to completely rebuild a totalled motor, which is half what OPC charge to replace one.

The only thing I really want covered is the engine and gearbox.
If anything went wrong with the rest of the car then I'd pay as and when.
Besides, Zentrum know the car inside out and I feel confident in what they say so I may take the risk and run without a warranty.
Just need to get my head around running what was a £114k car with no back up. (apart from my savings...)

The car I'm having is still in Porsche warranty under the old regime but can't have the new warranty unles it has
a. A Porsche battery £208 PLUS fitting (as opposed to the battery it has now that was £90 fitted by owner 6 months ago)
b. A full main service at OPC £1300, because it's last service was at an Indy (£350)
c. The obligatory 'pads and discs all round or no warranty, sir' line from the OPC £1300, even though there's loads of pad and disc life left (OE parts but fitted at Indy for £400)
The list goes on and on.
There's a guy on Pistonheads who was refused a new warranty because he'd had his wheels refurbed at a non-approved Porsche place, even though the wheels aren't covered under the warranty.
Another refused warranty because he has a Bluetooth fitted.
Another because he had LED interior light bulbs as the normal ones kept blowing and the OPC couldn't find what was wrong...
I kid you not.

He said he'd think about covering the turbo models if/when more people request it.

These aren't OPC decisions, these are written in black and white on the T&C's from Porsche.
I know the turbo engine is of the earlier GT1 block so RMS/shaft failure isn't a particular worry.
I just think I need peace of mind.
Since my last post I've spoken to someone via a friend who works for the Inchcape group dealing with warranties.
It looks like he may be able to get one of theirs for the Porsche.
I'll find out more in the morning.
